19th Annual Tony Williams Scholarship Jazz Festival Set for Labor Day Weekend 2009

The 19th Annual Tony Williams Scholarship Jazz Festival in memory of Pernell “Percy” Council, will take place on Labor Day Weekend (Friday, September 4 - Monday, September 7) at the Embassy Suites Hotel (Airport), 9000 Bartram Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19153 (215) 365-4500.

The Scholarship Festival will welcome world renowned headliners to include trombonist, Don Collins; saxophonists, Louis Taylor, Tim Warfield & Bruce Williams; vocalists, Nina Bundy, Ella Gahnt, Barbara Morrison & Jackie Ryan; pianists, Aaron Graves, Roy Meriwether, Dick Morgan, Dave Posmontier & Phil Wright; and drummers, Lucky Thompson. This years honorees include musical educators, Mike Boone, Jamal Dickerson and Mark Mitchell; founder of the Council of Jazz Advocates (COJA), Thelma Anderson and festival publicist/supporter, Verna Edwards. Special festival guests include Philadelphia’s own Bill Cosby and Dr. Verolga Nix & the Intermezzo Choir.

Festival honorees will be presented with their awards, Saturday evening preceding Jackie Ryans’ concert at 8:30 p.m. Additional events include a reception each night in the Atrium, a pool side jam, vendors, workshops, and so much more.
