NEW YORK CITY (Mon., 20 June 2005)—VERITAS, an organization dedicated to healing families and children that have been torn apart by substance abuse, will bring together some of the most respected names in music and media at the VERITAS 17th Annual Evening With Friends of Charlie Parker Benefit Concert and Gala, to be held on Monday, September 26th at 6 PM at the Manhattan Center, 311 West 34th Street. Peter Jennings and Kayce Freed will serve as honorary chairs for the event.
This year, VERITAS honors the achievements of Sheila Nevins, president of HBO Documentary and Family programming, a leader in the entertainment industry for her work to raise awareness in the area of at-risk children, as reflected in documentary films such as “Rehab,” “Crank,” “How To Raise A Drug Free Child” and this year’s Oscar-winning film Born Into Brothels.” Under her leadership, HBO and Cinemax Documentary and Family programs have won 15 Academy Awards, 34 Prime Time Emmy Awards, 37 News and Documentary Emmys and 25 Peabody Awards. Every year, musicians and friends gather to celebrate and pay tribute to the late jazz great Charlie “Bird” Parker and to support the work of VERITAS. A group of distinguished co-chairs includes Stanley Crouch, writer; Florence A. Davis, President, The Starr Foundation; Larry J. Fischer, Time Warner Cable; Bob Herbert, columnist, The New York Times; Elliot Goldenthal, Composer; Diane McNulty, Group Director, Community Affairs and Media Relations, The New York Times, the Hon. Charles B. Rangel; Julie Taymor, Director; Gerri Warren-Merrick, Time Warner; and Dominique Simon. About 800 people are expected to attend the gala and concert. This year's musical honorees are the legendary pianists and composers Hank Jones and Randy Weston. VERITAS will also feature a special performance tribute to the VERITAS Founders’ Circle by Clark Terry, Jon Faddis and Nasheet Waits.
