While it used to be that the only way to get into the business side of music business was to fight your way from the bottom up, such is no longer exclusively the case, with more and more schools offering formal education in the music business. Here we look at some of the best.

Guest post by Bobby Owsinski of Music 3.0

It used to be that if you wanted to be in the music business on the business side of things, the only way to learn about it was by somehow getting a job in the industry and working your way up. That’s still true to some extent, but it’s now easier than ever to get formerly educated about the industry thanks to the fact that just about every college and university now has some sort of a music business program.

That’s all well and good, but as with recording and music programs, it doesn’t help much if you’re being taught by someone who doesn’t have much actual experience in the industry, as is sometimes the case. Billboard recently came out with a list of its top 15 music business schools that provide a good overview of the many fine programs now available.

None of these programs are inexpensive (what college is these days?), but if you want to get into the business end of the music business, you stand a much better chance with an eduction from any of the following schools. I’ve been honored to speak at many on the list, and most use my books in their courses (thank you kindly!).

Here we go, in no particular order:
  • The Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business (Belmont University, Nashville)
  • Berklee College of Music (Boston, Mass.)
  • Hofstra University (Hempstead, N.Y.)
  • Los Angeles College of Music (Pasadena, Calif.)
  • Los Angeles Film School (Los Angeles, Calif.)
  • Middle Tennessee State University (Murfreesboro, Tenn.)
  • Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music (New York University Tisch School of the Arts, New York)
  • Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development (New York University, New York)
  • Pepperdine University (Malibu, Calif.)
  • Bandier Program for Music and the Entertainment Industries (Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y.)
  • Herb Alpert School of Music (University of California Los Angeles, California)
  • Frost School of Music (University of Miami, F.L.)
  • University of North Texas College of Music (Denton, T.X.)
  • Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy (University of Southern California, Los Angeles)
  • USC Thornton School of Music (University of Southern California, Los Angeles)
Congrats to administration and faculty of the above institutions.
