“Don’t Give Up On Detroit” a portrait of Motown musical mentor Marcus Belgrave, is the latest offering from Jazz Video Guy" Bret Primack, who has recently passed the six million views mark on his YouTube channel.
Last month Bret was in Detroit to interview Belgrave for the video podcast series, Ray Charles, Genius." Bret explains that with all the negative publicity about Detroit, he was somewhat reluctant to visit, but that “although jobs have been lost and the city looks devastated, there's a very strong musical community that has coalesced around Marcus Belgrave.”
The video features performance clips as well an interview with Belgrave, two musicians he mentored, bassist Marion Hayden and drummer Gayelynn McKinney, and the observations of a true Jazz lover, Rep. John Conyers.
Bret has posted four new Sonny Rollins videos, as well. He traveled to Costa Mesa, CA, at the end of April, where Sonny was playing at the Orange County Performance Center and shot some video at the rehearsal, and of the performance, featuring Sonny's composition Strode Rode.
He also edited Rollins interview footage into three short videos, Why A Guitar, The Role of the Rhythm Section, and My Music.
These videos are posted on YouTube and on Sonny's site.
