CLASSIC JAZZ PHOTOS FOR YOUR OFFICE OR HOME!

THE BLUE NOTE PHOTOGRAPHY OF FRANCIS WOLFF—$100 per print

Bllue Note co-founder Francis Wolff was a master photographer. Bringing his camera to every Blue Note session, he built an archive of great photographic value and a visual documentation of jazz history unmatched at any other record company. His ability to light, frame and capture a shot in less than a second was astonishing. His work has been likened to that of the great portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh. But where Karsh had hours with an obedient subject to get a shot, Frank had an instant with a preoccupied musician. And he didn't waste shots reaching for an image. His eye and his technique nailed it, usually in the first shot... not unlike the way great jazz soloists can nail a masterpiece on the first take.

Shop.allaboutjazz.com offers 111 images from classic Blue Note sessions. These museum-quality fine art Francis Wolff prints, made with archival pigment inks on 100% acid-free rag paper, are available for $100 each. The image is 7.5" square and is printed on 8.5" X 11" paper.

Please allow 2 to 4 weeks for shipment because each print is made to order.

RECOMMENDED JAZZ DVDS

Wes Montgomery: Live In '65
—$19.98

Footage of this great guitarist is so scarce that these three performances would be a thrill regardless of quality. But Wes delivers fully on this great European footage backed by the trios of Pim Jacobs, Harold Mabern and Stan Tracey.

'Tis Autumn: The Search for Jackie Paris
—$19.98

Filmmaker Raymond De Felitta's great documentary is built around the plunge into obscurity that befell singer Jackie Paris after a promising career start. De Felitta rediscovers Paris just as the singer was making a comeback appearance at the Jazz Standard in New York City in March 2004.

Return To Forever: Returns: Live At Montreux 2008
—$14.98

Chick Corea, Al Di Meola, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White reunited in 2008 for a world tour. The extraordinary concert in great sound from the Montreux Jazz Festival shows that they picked up right where they left off 32 years earlier. Bonus material from the U.S. tours bears that out.

Wayne Shorter: Live at Montreux 1996
—$14.98

This great set features Shorter's band with guitarist David Gilmore, pianist Jim Beard, bassist Alphonso Johnson and drummer Rodney Holmes. The bonus material is even more amazing with two tracks each by a 1991 quartet of Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Stanley Clarke and Omar Hakim and the 1992 Miles Davis Tribute band of Shorter, Wallace Roney, Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams.

Nina Simone: Live In '65 & '68
—$19.98

In her prime, Nina Simone was one of the most powerful and riveting performers to step on a stage. These two appearances from Holand in 1965 and England in 1968 are perfect examples. She is positively searing on “Four Woman" and “Mississippi Goddamn."

Icons Among Us: Jazz in the Present Tense
—$24.98

This exceptional documentary looks at the creative jazz artists of today such as Nicholas Payton, Terence Blanchard, Ravi Coltrane, Dave Douglas, Brian Blade, Roy Hargrove, Bill Frisell and Matthew Shipp among others and makes an excellent case for this being as strong and creative a jazz scene as any previous era.

NEW MOSAIC RECORDS LIMITED EDITION BOX SET

The Complete Ahmad Jamal Trio Argo Sessions 1956-1962 (9 CDs)—$149.00

His recording as a piano trio leader on Argo, owned by Chicago's Chess recording label, began in 1956. And that's where this new retrospective begins on The Complete Ahmad Jamal Trio Argo Sessions 1956-62. The first definitive collection of his work from this seminal era of his career, it includes all the tunes for which Jamal became renowned, such as “Ahmad's Blues," “Poinciana," “But Not For Me," and “Billy Boy," a song so often re-done in Jamal's style that his version has almost become the new standard.

Rehearing these records today is no passive experience. His performances have a quality that forces you to hang on every note. Nothing is ever predictable, and a listener can go from disc to disc with no danger of fatigue setting in. Even songs you are certain you know inside and out are transformed by his tempos, his rhythmic transfusions, or his playful avoidance of familiarity; he will take his time working into the melody, and just as that glow of comfortable recognition surrounds you, he'll break off unexpectedly, often before the line is complete.

Like all Mosaic Records Limited Edition Box Sets, the collection comes with a deluxe, full-size booklet. It includes discographical information, an extensive interview with Jamal by Kenny Washington, an essay on the sessions by Washington and many rare contemporary photographs.
