Wealth of Jazz October 27 - November 4 at Symphony Space

Symphony Space, at 2537 Broadway (95th Street) in Manhattan, will feature four major jazz events in its Leonard Nimoy Thalia over the next two weeks:

1) Thursday, October 27

Paris Combo – Only New York appearance
Friday, October 27 @ 8:00 pm “[The] coolest sounds on either side of the Atlantic” (Billboard Magazine) Paris Combo is a delicious celebration of contemporary Paris, reflecting influences of blues, swing, Gypsy, flamenco, and North African rhythms. A jazzy and sexy version of the rootsy chanson tradition, this quintet of Paris-based musicians is fronted by the enchanting Belle du Berry, who writes the lyrics and most of the group's music. 2) Friday, October 28:, 8:30 PM: Gordon Chambers

“A songwriter of the highest order” (Soul Sorts) After years of writing hit songs for such artists as Whitney Houston, Gladys Knight, Anita Baker, Patti LaBelle and Ron Isley, Gordon Chambers recently released his debut album, Introducing Gordon Chambers. The Grammy Award-winner is stepping out to show his colors as a soul singer in his own right. A veteran, and highlight, of past Symphony Space concerts (including last year’s tribute to Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life, and appearances with the Symphony Space Adventurers Orchestra), Chambers will be both stirring and smoothing souls with his warm, silky vocals. 3) Thursday, November 3, 7:30 PM Greg Osby appearing on discussion/performance Blue Note Live with Bruce Lundvall

Blue Note Records, the legendary record label, has on its roster most of the world’s most famous, revered and influential jazz artists of today. Bruce Lundvall, CEO of Blue Note, hosts a series of intimate conversations and musical performances with four Blue Note artists who represent not only the wide stylistic scope, but the past, present and future of the label. These evenings offer an unparalleled opportunity to hear these great musicians play an intimate performance, and speak about their work with the person who helps them get their word out to the world. Saxophonist, composer, producer and educator Greg Osby has made an indelible mark on contemporary jazz as a leader of his own ensembles and as a guest artist with other acclaimed jazz groups of the past 20 years. Notable for his insightful and innovative approach to composition and performance of original jazz music, Osby is a shining beacon among the current generation of jazz musicians. He has earned numerous awards and critical acclaim for his recorded works and passionate live performances.

4) Friday, November 4, 8:30 PM: Peter Apfelbaum and The New York Hieroglyphcs

“Not only a compelling vision of jazz in the present, but…what jazz might yet become.” (The Essential Jazz Records, Vol. 2) “The coolest sounds on either side of the Atlantic" - Billboard Composing and exploring non-traditional music forms, the New York Hieroglyphics celebrate the release of their acclaimed album, It Is Written. Led by Peter Apfelbaum, who first formed the pioneering Hieroglyphics band while in high school on the West Coast, this “big band” continues to bridge multiple stylistic and cultural elements.
