NEWARK, NJ: Jazz station WBGO-FM/Jazz 88.3 continued its winning streak at this year’s awards celebrations, adding eight more honors from the Public Radio News Directors, Inc. (PRNDI), Jazz Journalists Association (JJA) and the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. Earlier this year in May, the station swept the Radio Category with three First Place honors at the 2012 New York Association of Black Journalists (NYABJ).
WBGO News received six national awards at the annual PRNDI Conference in Houston, Texas, on June 30. Winning more awards than any other station in Division B (newsrooms with 3-4 full-time reporters), WBGO has won 50 PRNDI Awards since 1998.
WBGO received PRNDI awards in the following categories:
First Place – Breaking News for “Hurricane Irene” – WBGO News Team
First Place – Continuing Coverage for “Hurricane Irene and its Aftermath”
First Place – Writing for Andrew Meyer’s “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On”
Second Place – Public Affairs Program – “WBGO Journal”
Second Place – Call-in Program – “Newark Today”
Second Place – News Feature – for Monica Miller’s “Roll Call” about the Newark Police Department
“We are honored that the WBGO News Department continues to be recognized for its commitment to breaking news, in-depth reporting and public affairs programming, ” said Doug Doyle, WBGO News Director, Morning News Anchor and Producer/Co-Host of the WBGO Journal. “We strive to dig as deeply as possible into issues to bring listeners the best and fullest accounts of today’s news. To be chosen for six awards among such lofty competition and outstanding public radio stations is indeed an honor.”
Josh Jackson, WBGO Special Projects Producer and Producer/Host of The Checkout, took home the Willis Conover-Marian McPartland Award for Broadcasting at the annual JJA Awards held at The Blue Note jazz club in New York City on June 20. The Checkout, an hour-long music magazine, features emerging musicians, what’s new on the New York jazz scene and includes a dedicated website with on-demand content, interviews, artist playlists, sessions from the WBGO performance studio and concert recordings from clubs, concert halls, and festivals. The program, which airs Tuesdays at 6:30 pm, is also available as a podcast.
“The WBGO family is proud and pleased to congratulate Josh for receiving the Willis Conover-Marian McPartland Award for Broadcasting this year, as well as in 2010, ” said Thurston Briscoe, WBGO Vice President, Programming and Production. “It is a tremendous honor for Josh to be nominated and selected by a group of peers to receive this prestigious award, which pays homage to two very special icons of jazz journalism, including one of WBGO’s own, Marian McPartland, host of Piano Jazz.”
In addition, WBGO reporter Monica Miller received the Ippies Award for Best Use of Audio in Reporting for her story, “Newark Roll Call, ” which aired on WBGO on July 29, 2011. In the radio piece, Miller detailed the growing tension between community members and Newark’s police force. The Ippies are considered a benchmark of journalistic excellence and are a coveted prize for the publishers, editors, and reporters in New York City's ethnic and community press.
