Live On-Air Broadcast April 8-27th at 2 p.m. on WBGO 88.3 FM and on WBGO.org.

WBGO Jazz 88.3 FM brings bright, new jazz talent to its airwaves in April with the fourth annual student jazz live broadcast festival, Next Generation JAMs. April is Jazz Appreciation Month, JAM for short, and from Wednesday, April 8th through Monday, April 27th, WBGO will feature a different jazz school ensemble in a live in-studio performance. Each hour-long broadcast will begin at 2 p.m.

WBGO Jazz 88.3 FM listeners will have the rare opportunity to hear the next wave of jazz legends before they grace some of the nation’s most famous venues. Each jazz education program was selected for the caliber of the musicians that emerge from the program. “There are a number of jazz musicians known to all of us who came out of, or are teaching in one of these schools,” says WBGO Program Director Thurston Briscoe. He joined forces with Martin Mueller, Executive Director at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music to form the student jazz festival.

The first student jazz ensemble to perform, on Wednesday, April 8th, will be the William Paterson University Jazz Septet under the direction of Mulgrew Miller and David Demsey. The William Paterson University Jazz Studies Program, founded in 1973 by music faculty member Martin Krivin and trumpeter/arranger Thad Jones, emphasizes small-group playing and improvisation. Influential jazz pianist Mulgrew Miller is their Director of Jazz Studies.

The Wayne Shorter Combo from New Jersey City University will be the next ensemble featured live on Friday, April 10. The ensemble is coached by Bob Malach, who previously worked with legendary Horace Silver.

The Juilliard Institute for Jazz Studies program is the newest professional education component offered by the Juilliard School, a world-renowned conservatory with concentrations in music, dance and acting, formed through collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center in 2001. On Thursday, April 22nd, The Juilliard Jazz Artist Diploma Ensemble, from Juilliard’s two-year post bachelor's Artist Diploma program, will perform live at the WBGO studios. With a repertoire ranging from the Modern Jazz Quartet to early New Orleans jazz, Juilliard jazz ensembles also present students’ original compositions and arrangements in concert. The small jazz ensembles are conducted by Carl Allen, Rodney Jones and Kenny Barron. Juilliard also boasts a number of jazz legends as alumni, notably trumpeter Miles Davis, percussionist Tito Puente and singer Nina Simone.

Thursday, April 23rd brings the New School Jazz Ornette Coleman Ensemble from The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music to WBGO Jazz 88. Celebrated jazz saxophonist, composer, producer and faculty member Jane Ira Bloom leads the group. Bloom has won many awards, including: Mary Lou Williams Jazz Award for lifetime service to jazz, Downbeat International Critics Poll & Jazz Journalists Award for soprano saxophone, the IWJ Jazz Masters Award, and the Charlie Parker Fellowship for jazz innovation. The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music is distinguished by its artist-as-mentor approach to classroom teaching, focusing on small-group performance, and a faculty comprised of legendary musicians.
