Wayne Escoffery NYC Jazz Workshops Now Registering All Instruments

New York Jazz Academy, the fastest growing music school in New York City, is pleased to announce a new workshop offering for all instruments. Line Building with Wayne Escoffery is open to intermediate-advanced level instrumentalists who are looking to improve their skills related to playing jazz lines. This is a weekly workshop that will meet for one hour in each session. Classes begin Thursday, April 8, 7pm.

Topics covered in the workshop include:

Methods for playing through chord changes
Bebop scale exercises and patterns
Common bebop phrases and basic vocabulary for improvising
Scale and arpeggio knowledge
Diatonic Patterns and exercises
Improvising with Pentatonics and triads
Applying improvisational devices to common chord progressions and tunes
Solo development and phrasing
Studying jazz masters and their styles through transcription

Prerequisites for the workshop include:

A desire to improve your improvisational ability
Knowledge of major scales
Knowledge of basic 7th chords
Ability to read musical notation
Ability to read chord diagrams for chords and scales

This is a great way to learn the skills necessary to play jazz effectively while getting a chance to play with other musicians.

Tuition: $240 for 8 weeks.
Dates: April 8, 2010 - June 10, 2010. No classes on April 21 and April 28.
Time: Thursdays, 7pm-8pm. Walk-ins are welcome ($35 cash).
Location: The Church of St. Paul & St. Andrew, First Floor Sanctuary, 263 West 86th St. (at West End Ave.), New York, NY, 10024.

About the instructor

Saxophonist Wayne Escoffery has been fortunate enough to study with some of the greatest jazz musicians in the world. Some of them include Jackie McLean, Ron Carter, George Coleman, Clark Terry, and Barry Harris. He also has first hand experience playing with word class jazz musicians such as Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Jimmy Cobb, Ben Riley, Tom Harrell and many others. While presently a working part of the New York City jazz scene, Wayne has experience introducing music to all ages and has learned the history of American Music from many of the innovators of the last five decades.
