Jazz Vocalist Michelle Walker Plays
Smoke Jazz Club in New York City

Acclaimed jazz vocalist and newcomer, Michelle Walker will be performing at SMOKE Jazz Club on Sunday December 11, 2005. Walker, a recent New York City transplant from the Washington, DC area, is one of the finest rising jazz voices to emerge in years. Often compared to Cassandra Wilson and Nina Simone, Walker's voice moves easily from a dark, deep tone to an effortless, swinging, midrange lilt.

Walker, a Mark Murphy protege, studied with the legendary jazz vocalist for 2 1/2 years. In October 2004, Murphy invited Walker to open for him in concert at Jazz on Granby while he was on tour. They performed with The John Toomey Trio. (Rene Marie-Live at the Jazz Standard-Maxjazz)

Pianist-David Budway

David Budway is one of the most distinctive pianists on today's international jazz scene. While deeply rooted in classical music and rock and roll music, his masterful command for the modern jazz vocabulary has propelled him into the midst of present-day jazz pioneers. He is quickly becoming a highly sought- after accompanist, arranger, film composer, and songwriter.

David relocated to New York City in 1997 and immediately became a much sought after player in many genres. David became Stanley Turrentine's pianist, and the pianist for both the Jeff 'Tain' Watts and Regina Carter Quintets. David can be heard on “Bar Talk" by Jeff 'Tain' Watts on Sony/Columbia. This album also features a Budway composition entitled “Kiss". The L.A. Times says that Budway has a “...classical touch....[with] fiery improvisational passages..." David currently tours with Hubert Laws and Jeff 'Tain' Watts.
