Butch Morris conducts Elliott Sharp's CARBON

Butch Morris “Most impressive, and most valuable was Morris' ability to unite his players into a vibrant community that while being unlike any other still made the listener feel perfectly at home." - Bob Blumenthal, The Boston Phoenix

Elliott Sharp Elliott Sharp, a mainstay of the New York underground for more than a decade, exudes precise control, deftly balancing improvisation and composition, classic idioms and unprecedented ones, order and chaos. Few players are as articulate about music as the dauntingly intelligent guitarist/composer. Joe Gore, Guitarlayer

Two major forces will meet for the first time as conduction pioneer Butch Morris takes the reins of Elliott Sharp's long running ensemble Carbon. This event kicks off a month of Butch Morris Conductions in February, as the maestro celebrates the 20th anniversary of his unique system of conduction. Lawrence D. “Butch" Morris has been engaged with music since his childhood in California during the fifties and sixties. Although he has been a major force as both a trumpeter and composer, Morris' most significant contributions have been through his system of conduction. Morris defines conduction as “A vocabulary of ideographic signs and gestures activated to modify or construct a real time musical arrangement or composition." Morris has been developing his own system of conduction since the early 1980s, and has implemented his approach throughout the world in both performances and workshops.

Guitarist / composer Elliott Sharp has been a mainstay of the downtown scene since the early 1980s when he began making waves along with his contemporaries and collaborators such as John Zorn and John Lurie. His activities have varied widely, from playing his blues band Terraplane to creating compositions based on chaos theory and fractal geometry. His large ensemble Carbon was formed in 1983 and has been a primary vehicle for performing Sharp's compositions. Like Morris, Sharp has been commissioned to present his pieces throughout the globe and has collaborated with musicians of all backgrounds, from Oliver Lake to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

This opportunity to hear one of jazz's longest standing large ensembles under the baton of master conductor Morris promises to be a significant musical event.

Tickets available at the door. $10 per set / $15 for the evening. Sets at 7:30pm & 9pm Non-press inquiries, call 212.696.6681 or send email to info@visionfestival.org Coming up
