Nonesuch Releases Two Original Songs Written and Performed by Ethan Hawke from Richard Linklater’s Golden Globe-winning Boyhood

Film soundtrack also available on Nonesuch

Boyhood awarded three Golden Globes: Best Motion Picture—Drama; Best Director—Motion Picture; and Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture

“A landmark achievement and easily the year’s most emotional film, channeling real life with seamless authenticity in a way that movies rarely do. It’s bound to be talked about for years to come.” —Claudia Puig, USA Today

Boyhood has just won three Golden Globe awards for Best Motion Picture-Drama; Best Director—Motion Picture (Richard Linklater); and Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture (Patricia Arquette). Nonesuch Records released the soundtrack to the film—which was written, directed, and co-produced by Linklater—last year. And now the label digitally releases two additional songs written specifically for the movie by Ethan Hawke—“Split the Difference (Daddy’s Lullaby),” performed by Hawke and Charlie Sexton, and “Ryan’s Song,” performed by Hawke with Ellar Coltrane, Lorelei Linklater, and Jennifer Tooley. The two new tracks are available now at iTunes and nonesuch.com. Shot over 12 years with the same cast, Boyhood is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (a breakthrough performance by Ellar Coltrane), who literally grows up on screen before the viewers’ eyes. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason’s parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha, Boyhood charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film before. Jonathan Sehring, John Sloss, and Cathleen Sutherland produced the film with Linklater.

The film’s soundtrack spans the story’s 12 years, with songs ranging from the year 2000 (Coldplay’s “Yellow” and The Hives’ “Hate to Say I Told You So”) to 2013 (Yo La Tengo’s “I’ll Be Around”). The album also includes the classic “Band on the Run,” by Paul McCartney and Wings (from the 2010 re-mastered album of the same name), and the debut of a new song written by Jeff Tweedy and performed by the father/son duo Tweedy—“Summer Noon.” A full track listing follows. The Boyhood soundtrack album was produced by Richard Linklater and Randall Poster.

Hawke recently explained to the Hollywood Reporter: “When Rick [Linklater] and I decided to make my character a songwriter, he gave me the challenge to write some songs for the movie. We didn’t know at that time whether they would be in the movie or not, but it allowed me to take some time and get into character… If it had been a normal movie I never would have been able to come up with two songs, but I had 12 years!” He continues, “Rick said, ‘Over the course of the next year, try and write a song.’ I played it for him and he loved it and he said, ‘Why don’t you play it for the kids in the movie?’ Then we came up with another one that seemed appropriate for the film and incorporated it into the story.”
