Trumpeter Farnell Newtonin Concert at University of Portland Portland, Ore.

Depriest Family Jazz, a local nonprofit focused on bringing jazz to audiences of allages in family venues, is proud to present the young and gifted trumpeter and composer Farnell Newton in concert. Newton will perform, along with a Portland-based rhythm section, on Saturday, October 21 at 7 p.m. in the University of Portland Buckley Center Auditorium.

Newton will play a mix of bebop and avant-garde jazz as well as music from his own recordings. Theevening will feature jazz with a rhythm section of Portland-based musicians, including Jof Lee on piano, Ed Bennett on bass and Akbar DePriest on drums.

There will be a short intermission with free refreshments.

Farnell Newton, 29, was born in Miami, where he was exposed to many forms of music--jazz, salsa, funk and hip-hop. He has learned, lived and experienced music from Philadelphia to Denver to Ohio, where he graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and had the opportunity to perform with musicians such as Aretha Franklin, James Moody, Muhal Richard Abrams and Hugh Ragin. Farnell recently settled in Portland and has performed with Klezmocracy, Mel Brown, Thara Memory, Cana Son, Conjunto Allegre and Darrell Grant. His just finished his debut CD, Sense of Direction, which was a collaborative effort with pianist Marcus Reynolds.

DePriest Family Jazz fosters an understanding and appreciation of jazz for multigenerational audiences through concerts and programs featuring local musicians and national headliners.
