Tribute to the Jazz Pianist Hank Jones

SOURCE: Published:
Hank Jones BACK in 1979, when Mark Morganelli was presenting jazz in his East Village loft, he inadvertently gave the drummer Jimmy Cobb a check that bounced. Mr. Cobb--who was already a prominent figure in jazz, having appeared with Miles Davis on classic records like “Kind of Blue" and “Sketches of Spain"--was unaccustomed to receiving bad checks.

But the incident did not sour the men's relationship. On Aug. 19, Mr. Morganelli, who said he and Mr. Cobb are now fast friends, will again present the drummer, this time in a tribute to the pianist Hank Jones, who died at 91 in May. The concert promises to be a highlight among 30 free summer shows that Mr. Morganelli is producing in Westchester and Connecticut this year, the 25th anniversary of his organization, Jazz Forum Arts.

Mr. Cobb's concert is one of four sunset shows Mr. Morganelli is staging on Thursdays in August at the 67-acre Lyndhurst estate in Tarrytown, a national landmark rich in cultural history. At the concert, Mr. Cobb said, he will be leading a quartet that includes Javon Jackson on saxophone, George Cables on piano and John Webber or Buster Williams on bass.

The group, Mr. Cobb said, will draw material from “West of 5th," an album that Mr. Cobb released in 2006 with Mr. Jones, with whom he had a long relationship. The album includes popular standards, bebop and a ballad Mr. Cobb wrote for his sister, “Eleanor," which he said the band was almost certain to play.
