TRANQUILITY JAZZ FESTIVAL 2003 TAKES PLACE IN ANGUILLA

Amidst overcast skies and heavy showers of rain, punctuated by fleeting sunbursts and brief starry skies, the first Annual Tranquility Jazz Festival took place in Anguilla from November 14-16, 2003.

The mood was very upbeat and positive as hundreds of visitors, residents and Anguillians filled the elegant Santorini Restaurant and Lounge area at the Cuisinart Resort & Spa, the official Host Hotel of the Tranquility Jazz Festival for the first nightly performance which showcased the Eric Reed Trio, along with special guests, James Moody, Bobby Watson and Donald Harrison.

On the second night of the event, the Cuisinart Resort and Spa was once again the backdrop for an exciting night of exhilarating Latin Jazz with the Hilton Ruiz Trio and special guests, Steve Turre, Sonny Fortune, Vanessa Rubin and Dave Valentin.

The event culminated on Sunday evening with an eclectic afternoon Jazz on the Beach session, featuring the Anastacia Laaharmonie Jazz ensemble of St Martin, the Anguilla Jazz Ensemble and the the Anguilla Community Jazz Ensemble, which was filmed by BET Event Productions for airing in 2004 as part of the popular Jazz in the Sun series on BET JAZZ.

Over 30 members of the international and regional press were on hand with their local counterparts to provide coverage of the Festival as a means of promoting interest in the event for 2004. A number of BET celebrity guests were also on hand for the inaugural occasion.

In speaking of the much anticipated musical event, Chairman of the Anguilla Tourist Board, Mr John Benjamin, pointed out that while the inclement weather conditions had seriously compromised the location of the nightly performances, the alternate location had provided an ideal setting for the mellow rhythms of straight ahead jazz, and while it was unfortunate that more persons from the region could not travel into the island because of the adverse conditions they too were experiencing, it was important to realize that the overall objective of the Festival had always been to create and increase awareness of the destination in its major markets, and, at the same time, to provide a
