Legendary trumpet players contributed to the majestic sound of The Duke Ellington Orchestra. Trumpeter, Composer and Arranger, Randy Sandke has assembled an All Star band to demonstrate the unique styles of Ray Nance, Cootie Williams, Bubber Miley, Rex Stewart, Cat Anderson and Clark Terry. The styles will be expertly displayed by Randy Sandke, Joe Wilder and a third trumpeter to be named soon. Multitalented Scott Robinson will perform on various reed instruments, including baritone, tenor and more. The rhythm section of Don Friedman on piano, Nicki Parrott on bass and vocals and Eddie Locke on drums will support both the melodic and passionately blazing sounds of the trumpeters.
Randy Sandke, musical director for this concert, composer, arranger and trumpeter, has performed at festivals, clubs, and concerts around the world. He has toured Europe over forty times and performed extensively throughout Japan, the U.S., Canada, and India.
Randy has recorded over twenty albums as a leader, primarily on the Concord and German Nagel-Heyer label. A recent discography, published by the Dutch jazz scholar Gerard Beilderman, runs to 53 pages. Among the artists Mr. Sandke has recorded with include Michael Brecker, Benny Goodman, Kenny Barron, Dick Hyman, Mulgrew Miller, Bill Charlap, Eric Reed, Frank Wess, Ray Anderson, Chris Potter, Sweets Edison, Wycliffe Gordon, Warren Vache, Jon Hendricks, Rosemary Clooney, Cab Calloway, and many others.
Randy Sandke has played on the soundtracks of several films, including Francis Ford Coppola's The Cotton Club," Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memories," American Splendor," and five Woody Allen movies. On Broadway, Randy has played in Chicago" and performed the on-stage Harry James trumpet solo which climaxes the show Fosse." He recorded all trumpet solos for the recent production of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" starring Whoopee Goldberg. He has performed on television in Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, in the U.S. with Benny Goodman for a PBS special, and on the Late Show with David Letterman.
As a composer, Randy Sandke has received two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, and has had pieces performed at Carnegie Hall, the 92nd St. YMHA, the Greenwich House in New York City, and Avery Fischer Hall at Lincoln Center. The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band has performed six of his suites and he has written transcriptions for Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.
Randy Sandke's book, Harmony for a New Millennium" was published by Hal Leonard, Inc. in 2002 It details a method of exploring non-tonal harmony in the context of both composition and improvisation.
His recent CD, Inside Out, was named one of the top ten albums of the year by Jazz Times in 2002.
Joe Wilder is a virtuoso trumpeter whose career spans five decades. He has performed with many of the great jazz bands, including Noble Sissle, Lucky Millander, Jimmie Lunceford, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Count Basie and Benny Goodman. He was a member of the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) for 16 years. Joe has played in the bands of many Broadway shows, including Guys and Dolls. He has recorded extensively and with many jazz greats, including Dinah Washington, Lena Horne, Charles Mingus among others. He has performed classical music with the New York Philharmonic and was principal trumpeter with the Symphony of the New World for 7 years. Joe performs with The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra.
Jumaane Smith is lead trumpeter for The Juilliard Jazz Orchestra. He has performed with such artists as Wynton Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon, Jon Faddis, Bobby Short, Herb Jeffries, Clark Terry, Percy Heath and Loren Schoenberg, among others. He has performed at The Montreux Jazz Festival, The North Sea Jazz Festival, and others. He is a highly versatile musician and his performance, composition and arranging credits range from Jazz to Classical.
