Thomas Zehetmair conducting SPCO in Minnesota

Thomas Zehetmair is one of the most significant violinists of our generation. He enjoys a successful international career, thrilling audiences and critics with his abilities as a soloist, chamber musician and conductor.

In Europe, Zehetmair is a regular guest of the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics, Gewandhaus Leipzig Orchestra, Vienna Chamber Orchestra, among others. He also performs with the NHK Tokyo Orchestra and with the Boston Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra and Cleveland Orchestra.

Thomas also enjoys a successful conducting career. In the 2002-03 season he took up his appointment as Music Director of the Northern Sinfonia in the U.K. With them he has had great success, including several CDs which have received excellent reviews. Their latest recording for Avie Records includes Sibelius' Symphonies Nos. 3 and 6 and Stravinsky's Violin Concerto with Thomas as both soloist and conductor.

Zehetmair also has a distinguished chamber music career. In 1994 he formed the internationally acclaimed Zehetmair Quartet, with which he has recorded string quartets by Hartmann, Hindemith, Bartók and Schumann on the ECM New Series. Their recordings of Schumann string quartets received the Gramophone Award (Record of the Year) and the Diapason d'Or de l'Année.

Zehetmair holds an honorary doctorate from the Music Academy Franz Liszt in Weimar.
