An emphasis on rhythm in Carnatic compositions and improvisations lead to lively interaction between the musicians, an exciting and spontaneous element of the Carnatic tradition.

Tonight will be the first of a Carnatic Series at Cornelia Street Cafe. Arun Ramamurthy will be inviting artists monthly to share their musical interpretations with the Cornelia Street audience. Tuesday, February 15 Arun will be joined by Akshay Anantapadmanabhan on mridangam and Sriram Ramesh on kanjira. The second set will feature a widely respected and talented vocalist, Ashvin Bhogendra

Curtis Macdonald, alto sax; Jeremy Viner, tenor sax; Chris Tordini, bass; Bobby Avey, piano; Jordan Perlson, drumsThe Curtis Macdonald Group is an ensemble composed of world-class improvising musicians, and one of this group's greatest strengths is its freedom with original music. Curtis brings new material into the group's repertoire often and presents the ensemble with ideas for experimentation on top of musical forms. No two pieces are alike, each having a unique character of its own to draw from as inspiration. A cohesive overall sound unites the contrasting repertoire, lighting up a dramatic energy and paving the way for improvisational interactivity on stage and shared with the audience.  “Curtis is a saxophonist of note, one who is worthy of great recognition." -Greg Osby.  “He constantly continues to impress me."— Kenny Werner

First coming to prominence in the late '50s with the pioneering trio of pianist Bill Evans, Motian has since worked in an array of contexts, and has led a number of groups. He is one of the most influential modern drummers, having played an important role in freeing the drummer from strict time-keeping duties. 29-year-old Dan Tepfer has been called “an exceptional young player who has made an indelible impact on the scene" by Time Out; he has achieved recognition for his voracious appetite, encompassing everything from notated music to free improvisation in contexts ranging from solo to full orchestra. Tepfer and Motian played together as part of the Lee Konitz quartet in 2009; this will be their second meeting.  “Brilliant... Dan Tepfer is a sharp young talent, rugged and emphatic . . .  A young pianist of exceptional poise who is drawn to the deeper currents of melody."- New York Times
