Saturday March 19, 2005 THE VISION CLUB presents 10pm Henry Grimes / Marshall Allen At Clemente Soto Velez - LES Gallery 107 Suffolk Street at Rivington

Continuing along their 2005 US tour, prodigal bassist Henry Grimes performs in a duo with Arkestra maestro, alto saxophonist Marshall Allen!!

By now, fans throughout the jazz world are familiar with the incredible story of bassist Henry Grimes. After missing from the music world for over 30 years, the bassist reappeared in the summer of 2003, making his debut at that year’s Vision Festival. Since then, Grimes has seen a surge of interest in his music, performing at festivals throughout Europe and the U.S. His performances have received glowing reviews in the Village Voice, Time Out New York, The New York Times, ABC News and elsewhere. Amazingly, after 30 years of musical hibernation, Grimes has returned at the top of his prowess.

An alternate path to musical mecca, has been taken by alto saxophonist Marshall Allen. The saxophonist has been active as a long-time member and, more recently, as maestro of the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra. Allen has kept the flame of the Arkestra burning as the leader of the group since 1995 while spurring the group on with his incendiary alto saxophone technique. Allen was also an early proponent of the use of African instruments in jazz, and both builds and plays the kora – a 21 stringed African harp. Performing in the intimate duo setting with Grimes provides a very different setting for the saxophonist than the larger Arkestra and allows for a clearer absorption of Allen’s myriad of musical methods.

This performance is the only New York appearance for this unique duo during their spring US tour.

Coming March 26: Gunter Hampel, Perry Robinson & Lou Grassi
