About Richard Sussman

Keyboardist/composer Richard Sussman may be one of New York City's best kept secrets. Coming from a journeyman background that has included stints with jazz greats such as Lionel Hampton, Buddy Rich, Lee Konitz, and Steve Slagle, Sussman has also worked with numerous rock and pop artists including Blood Sweat & Tears, Carly Simon, Anthony & the Imperials, Marty Balin, and Donna Summer.

As a soloist, Sussman combines deft lyricism with a strikingly original harmonic sense and formidable technique, producing solos that are models of form and rhythmic intensity.

Richard's first recording as a leader, “Free Fall", (now available on CD from Double-Time Records), features a quintet that included Tom Harrell on trumpet and Jerry Bergonzi on tenor sax. According to well-traveled bassist Mike Richmond, the album has become “an underground classic all over the world". Acknowledged by numerous musicians, educators, and students (including well-known jazz educator David Baker), the LP received top critical acclaim. A 4-star review in Downbeat praised Richard's “flair for well-wrought melody and firmly structured solos" as well as the entire band: “a quintet that could take its place on any stage in the land".

Here's what people are saying now about the re-release of Free Fall:

“Free Fall is unquestionably a lost classic of jazz and Richard Sussman is unquestionably one of jazz music's top composers, his pieces here all displaying a fierce individuality and rare beauty." --Marshall Bowden, Jazzitude.com/AllAboutJazz.com

“The re-release of a classic... Richard Sussman produced a truly great document, long overdue for re-release." --C. Michael Bailey, AllAboutJazz.com

“What makes Free Fall so memorable is the totality of its gifts--its compositions, its solos, the precocious fluidity of its musicians, the aptness of its instrumental sections, its thematic implicit mystery, its timelessness." --Don Williamson, 52nd St Jazz.com/AllAboutJazz.com
