The Andy Sugg Group releases The John Coltrane Project: Andy Sugg Plays Trane.

“Sugg's train at full steam—its fire forging new lines into the 21st century. An unforgettable journey!" —Gerry Koster, Jazz Up Late, ABC Jazz & ABC Classic FM.

“Music that moves the Coltrane legacy forward in an entrancing and powerful way." —Mal Stanley, Jazztrack, ABC Jazz & ABC Classic FM.

In the wake of the critically acclaimed 2010 Coltrane Anniversary Concert, The John Coltrane Project: Andy Sugg Plays Trane (Downstream Music) documents a very special gathering of musicians coming from as far afield as Turkey and New York, to celebrate a shared inspiration and to create inspired music in turn.

“Sugg's arrangements fuse the sound of first-generation British Punk (think Ian Dury and the Blockheads) with Coltrane's '50s bebop; while the drone of the Shruti Box, and vocal improvisations through the Gibson Echoplex, create radically new contexts for an exploration of Coltrane's later music. Sugg's music is an unapologetic celebration of a jazz which is still “becoming." Simon Felice.

“John Coltrane may have died many decades ago, but his spirit is still more than capable of pulling a crowd. Fitzroy's Cape Live felt like a snug jazz club in downtown New York, as eager patrons stood shoulder to shoulder." Jessica Nicholas, The Age.

“Brilliant, sparkling, strongly surging...Sugg is a high order musician." —The Sydney Morning Herald.

“A dedicated warrior." —David Liebman.

The album is released on Downstream Music, and is available from selected record stores and at CD Baby
