The Inaugural South Bend Jazz Festival To Be Held On Saturday, August 25th

Downtown South Bend Inc, is proud to announce, The Inaugural South Bend Jazz Festival, on Saturday, August 25th, 2012.

From conception to discussions with the Festival advisory board this spring, Artistic Director, Saxophonist Danny Lerman, has been working on presenting a special European- style Jazz Festival to the hometown audiences of South Bend, Indiana. The festival will be held on Saturday, August 25th, from 12 noon till 12 midnight on four different stages, in addition to a Jazz Jam from 12:00 midnight - 2:30 am, in the downtown South Bend area. 10 national acts from the variety of the Jazz genres will perform throughout this 12 hour time frame.

The Jazz Jam will occur at Club Fever from 12 midnight to 2:30 am, and be hosted by well known songwriter/musician Tim Gant (touring with the Ramsey Lewis Band currently). Admission to the outdoor festival is free (Morris Jazz Stage: starting time: 12 - 7:00pm). Nighttime Jazz passes (admission to all three jazz stages) are $10.00 for pre-sales at Michiana Key Bank branches, Trio’s Jazz Club and The Morris Performing Arts Center Box Office (574-235-9198 or morriscenter.org). Tickets will be available the day of at the Jazz Kiosk at Morris Jazz Stage Kiosk for $15.00 (people who buy tickets at the Jazz Kiosk during the day will be able to enter a drawing and win a Jazz CD Basket of all the Performing Acts) in addition to tickets being available at all three evening venues (Trio's Jazz Club, Club Fever and Club LaSalle). Each club will have Jazz Specials from their food menus available during the festival, making it an affordable way to hear great Jazz and sample great food for an unbeatable night on the town.

APPEARING AT THE SOUTH BEND JAZZ FESTIVAL

Pianist/Singer, JOE MCBRIDE

As a teenager, McBride contracted a degenerative eye disease and eventually lost his eyesight, but his passion for music was never impaired. He studied at Missouri School for the Blind, Webster University and North Texas State University to study jazz and performance. With the help of his new acoustic trio, McBride adds another significant title to his impressive discography with the July 2009 release of Lookin’ for a Change. On his latest Head Up recording he features songs originally written and recorded by a range of pop luminaries, including Gnarls Barkley, Coldplay, John Mayer and Seal and reinterprets them via straight ahead jazz arrangements.

Guitarist/Composer, FAREED HAQUE

Guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque has worked with prominent artists including Paquito D’rivera, Dave Holland, Sting, Joe Henderson, Joe Zawinul, Cassandra Wilson, Kurt Elling, Lester Bowie, Arturo Sandoval, Medeski-Martin and Wood, Kahil el Zabar, Defunckt, Ramsey Lewis, Nigel Kennedy, Edgar Meyer, Robert Conant, Stephen Stubbs, Frank Bungarten, members of the Vermeer Quartet and many symphony orchestras in the U.S. and abroad. Fareed has released nine recordings as a leader: Voices Rising and Manresa on Sting’s Pangaea label, and Sacred Addition, Opaque, and Deja Vu, on the prestigious Blue Note label, as well as Singh Song [Haven] and Cosmic Hug [Magnatude]. Haque's latest, ‘Flat Planet’ is available on OWL Studio Records.

Trumpeter, WALTER WHITE

Walter’s dynamic trumpet playing led him to work with many of the top names in music including Bob James, Dave Holland, the Woody Herman Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Gunther Schuller, and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, The JacoPastorius Big Band, and The Mingus Big Band. During the early 1990's, Walter toured and recorded with his boyhood hero, trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, and is featured on the CD, ‘Live from London’, playing The Fox Hunt, a sizzling duet with Maynard recorded at Ronnie Scott's in Soho. Currently, Walter serves as lead trumpeter for Dave Matthew’s Manhattan Jazz Orchestra, with whom he tours Japan on a bi-yearly basis, and has recorded six award-winning records for the Japanese market. Walter's playing has graced the sound tracks of records, movies, and television; most notably network sitcoms TAXI, and The Cosby Show.

Violinist, CHRISTIAN HOWES

Nominated recently for jazz “violinist of the year” by the Jazz Journalists Association, Christian was voted first place in the 2011 Downbeat Critics Poll (rising stars/jazz violin). The Minneapolis Tribune called Christian “arguably the most intriguing young violinist in jazz." He performs worldwide with his own ensembles and as a guest soloist with orchestras and bands. His performances are often accompanied by educational outreach activities. His most recent album on Resonance Records, “Out of the Blue," featuring Robben Ford, is available on this site at the shop.

Saxophonist, DANNY LERMAN WITH SPECIAL GUEST

South Bend native, saxophonist/composer, Danny Lerman, grow up in South Bend, studied at Berkeley and North Texas State, and recorded his first CD, Do You Feel?, in 1990. His newest CD Meow Baby was produced by drummer Tal Bergman and Jazz Icon, Norman Connors. Touring the world over the next two decades, Danny has shared recording/live stages with jazz icons Hubert Laws, Howard Hewett, Norman Connors and Randy Brecker, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker and Sergio Mendez. Lerman’s compositions have been featured in movie soundtracks: Wedding Bell Blues; Kill Me Later and commercials for JD Powers.

Saxophonist, SHELBY BROWN

Shelby 1st recording was No Boundaries which generated a radio buzz from Detroit to Singapore. The Meaning of Life, his 2nd recording, charted in the top 50 on smoothjazz.com for 20 weeks, and is currently holding the number 15 spot on the Smooth Indie Star Smooth Jazz Charts. Shelby became the proud endorser of Dymusic USA & Wisemann Saxophones which he shared with Grammy Award winning sax-man Marion Meadows. Shelby has toured from United States to Beijing and Shanghai. His endorsements have included Shelby became the proud endorser of Remle Musical Products Inc; Soundwear Gig Bags (manufacturer of Saxophone Cases), Oleg Products Inc. (manufacturer of custom Saxophone Accessories) and currently, L. A. Sax, while also performing with as Marion Meadows, Tim Bowman, Alex Bugnon, Bob Baldwin, Nick Colionne, Spyro Gyra, & Nelson Rangell.

Vocalist/songwriter, SPIDER SALOFF

Co-star/co-creator of the internationally syndicated Public Radio series Words and Music. Her latest release Like Glass not only received praise as a recording, but also for her original songs. Recently, Saloff was featured with the prestigious Chicago Jazz Orchestra in a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald. She received the honor of performing the American Premiere of a newly discovered song by the great Billy Strayhorn, “So This Is Love" and her Gershwin Centennial concert, Spider Saloff Sings Gershwin, toured the U.S. and headlined the St. Petersburg Gershwin Festival in Russia. Ms. Saloff has appeared at New York's Jazz at Lincoln Center, Iridium, Joe's Pub, Birdland, The Russian Tea Room, Michael's Pub, The Algonquin, San Francisco's Jazz at Pearl's, Plush Room, Seattle's Triple Door, Chicago's famed Gold Star Sardine Bar, Katerina's, The Green Mill, and the Fairmont Hotel.

Trumpeter, MIKE HACKETT

Michael Hackett is a multifaceted performer who has toured, performed or recorded as a freelance artist with Natalie Cole, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra Jr., Ben Vereen, Aretha Franklin, Wayne Newton, Larry Willis, Sir Roland Hanna, Larry Coryell, Keeter Betts, Steve Novosel, Ron Holloway, Vincent Herring, The Anita Brown Jazz Orchestra, The Scott Whittfield Jazz Orchestra, The Toshiko Akioshi Jazz Orchestra, and Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, Frankie Valli, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The O'Jay's and Bobby Caldwell. Circles, his first recording as a leader, was released on Summit Records in 2005.. Michael Hackett is an endorsing artist for Conn Vintage One trumpets and flugelhorns and has served as a member of the jazz faculty at Butler University and The Ohio State University.

Latin Jazz, Ritmos Unidos and Mike Spiro

Ritmos Unidos, based in the Midwest, is the newest and most exciting Caribbean Jazz group, made up of Indiana University professors and area professionals. Led by percussionist Michael Spiro, the group performs a wide variety of Latin music styles, including Latin Jazz, Salsa, Cha-cha, Afro-Cuban folkloric music, Calypso, and Brazilian Samba. Ritmos Unidos is: Michael Spiro-Congas, Joe Galvin-Steelpan, percussion, violin, vocals; Mike Mixtacki-Drum set, percussion, vocals; Pat Harbison -Trumpet; Nate Johnson- Tenor and Soprano Sax; Joel Tucker-Guitar, trombone and Jamaal Baptiste – Piano.

Saxophonist, DON LERMAN

Saxophonist Don Lerman, is a disciple of the Lester Young and “cool school” of jazz, having honed his craft with years of performance in many big bands and smaller groups in both the Midwest and the East coast. Don has performed and/or recorded with The Eddy Howard Orchestra, the J Street Jumpers, the Harry James Orchestra, the Spinners, the Uptown Rhythm Kings, and many other groups, including performances at the White House (Clinton years) and the Kennedy Center.
