New York, NY: Paul Williams, President of The ASCAP Foundation, announces that The ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composers Awards (an annual program for jazz composers) has received a major, multi-year financial commitment from The Herb Alpert Foundation. To honor that commitment, the program, established in 2002, has been renamed the Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Awards.

Selection of the winning scores is made by a panel of leading ASCAP jazz composer members. The winners receive cash awards. Original compositions are considered. Guidelines for the Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Awards program are posted on The ASCAP Foundation website.

Commenting on the Herb Alpert Foundation’s generosity, Willams said, “For more than 50 years, Herb Alpert has represented a commitment to fine music, both as an artist and during his years as an owner-executive at A&M Records. The Herb Alpert Foundation’s magnanimous support of a program designed to encourage the creation of new jazz is another facet of what has made Herb one of the most beloved and respected figures in music.”

Rona Sebastian, President of the Herb Alpert Foundation said of the scholarship program, “Herb Alpert’s continuing involvement and passion for Jazz is reflected in the Foundation’s partnership with ASCAP to support these annual Awards. The program helps young composers continue the evolving tradition of jazz, thereby nurturing and strengthening this living art form for the benefit of future generations.”
