DOYLESTOWN, PA—Jazz Nights at the James A. Michener Art Museum will offer a taste of the future with the Nazir Ebo Jazz Group November 20.

Ten-year-old Nazir Ebo started playing his brother's drums when he was 5. Last year, filmmaker Ken Burns selected the fifth-grader for a jazz program. Since then he has performed at the Philadelphia Clef Club, fundraising parties for WHYY, Philadelphia' West Oak Lane Jazz Festival, Chris' Jazz Café, Friends Select School in Germantown, the Firehouse Café in Mount Holly, N.J., and the Philadelphia Urban Food and Fitness Alliance.

Nazir Ebo—the name comes from his African grandparents' tribe—grew up surrounded by music. His mother, Carol Faulkner, is a classically trained pianist and his older brother, Justin Faulkner, toured with Branford Marsalis during his senior year of high school.

Young Nazir begins his day with a prayer, a healthy breakfast and a few laughs with his mom, then it's off to Hamilton Elementary School. When he comes home he changes his clothes and practices for an hour before homework. Later, he's allowed to play music until 8 p.m.—he also plays piano, trumpet and trombone —then it's bath time and in bed by 8:30 p.m.

“The baby-faced Ebo, who has not even reached the five-foot mark yet, (is) astounding on the drums," writes Wade Luquet on All About Jazz. “Young Ebo will be one to watch in the future, as will the others in the group who will no doubt carry jazz into its future."

“Nazir Ebo comes from a very talented family," says Zoriana Siokalo, director of programs at the Museum. “We are offering not only the region's top talents, but up-and-coming artists. The area high schools offer wonderful jazz programs, and the Museum's Jazz Nights are a wonderful opportunity for students of all ages to hear performances by renowned musicians, as well as young developing musicians."

Jazz Nights are all-inclusive evenings featuring hearty appetizers and desserts by Havana Catering and refreshments from River Horse Brewing Company and Sand Castle Winery from 8 to 10 p.m., with music from 8:30 to 11 p.m. Museum galleries are open until 10 p.m.

Advance tickets are required for Jazz Night. General admission seating may be purchased online at www.MichenerArtMuseum.org or by phone at 215-340-9800. Tickets cost $40, $34 for Museum members, $20 for students accompanied by a ticketed adult (must be purchased by phone). Reserved table seating for four or six people is $48 ($42 for Museum members). The reception and general Museum admission is included in the price.

This event is sponsored by Friends of Jazz Night.

Annual support for the Michener Art Museum is provided by The Pew Charitable Trusts, the Bucks County Commissioners and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
