Jazz comes in many flavors, and Berkshires Jazz, Inc. will be exploring ten of them in a special program on Feb. 25, in conjunction with Pittsfield’s annual 10x10 Upstreet Arts Festival. In “Ten Flavours of Jazz" (at Flavours of Malaysia, 8pm), the Matt DeChamplain Trio will present ten different instrumental and vocal stylings, the latter featuring Atla DeChamplain. The musical menu includes New Orleans/traditional; swing; Brazilian/bossa nova; stride; Kansas City/blues; west coast/cool; and even contemporary. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door, and are available now at BerkshiresJazz.org. Doors open at 7:45pm, dinner available separately.

Matt DeChamplain is a composer and a piano virtuoso, with a range that spans from delicate and intimate to energetic and powerful. A strong improviser and interpreter of the “great American jazz book,” he is joined by his wife, vocalist Atla DeChamplain; Matt Dwonszyk, bass; and Ben Bilello, drums. Atla is “moving by leaps and bounds towards stardom as a jazz vocalist,” according to the iconic vocalist Jon Hendricks, with whom she has appeared.

The trio last appeared in Pittsfield during 2015, as part of a sold-out centennial tribute to Billie Holiday and composer/pianist Billy Strayhorn. Often appearing as a duo, Matt and Atla appeared earlier this month at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, at Lincoln Center in New York. Located in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts about 40 miles from Albany, Pittsfield is the cultural center of the Berkshires.

The cabaret-style performance is part of Pittsfield’s sixth annual 10x10 Upstreet Arts Festival, during which cultural institutions present 10-themed programs, such as new 10-minute plays; readings of 10 poets; 10 days of play at the Berkshire Museum, etc. Berkshires Jazz’ past 10x10 programming has featured either instrumental or vocal approaches: 10 decades of jazz piano; the works of 10 jazz composers, the styles of 10 jazz vocalists, etc. The Flavours program will feature both instrumental and vocal stylings, and will include an original by pianist Matt DeChamplain.

Information about other jazz programming, and tickets, can be found at Berkshires Jazz. Information about the 10x10 Upstreet Arts Festival is available at Discover Pittsfield.
