Mission Statement: The Brooklyn Jazz Underground is an association of independent artists with a shared commitment to creativity and community. Through cooperative efforts, the BJU aims to build a greater awareness of original music emerging from Brooklyn, NY.
January, 2007 saw the birth of The Brooklyn Jazz Underground, a new collective conceived in the spirit of an entrepreneurial, do-it-yourself shift in the music industry, and the fast emergence of myriad independent artists and record labels, spawning a creative boom which counts Brooklyn as one of its bastions of innovation and artistry. The Brooklyn Jazz Underground, a vibrant, thriving, creative group, aimed at creating a widespread awareness of creative music made in Brooklyn, is proud to announce The 4th Annual Brooklyn Jazz Underground Festival, to take place at The Cornelia Street Caf over three nights, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 5th, 6th and 7th. The Festival will feature new BJU members, trumpeter David Smith, drummer Rob Garcia and saxophonist Adam Kolker, in addition to original members, Alexis Cuadrado, Alan Ferber, Dan Pratt and Sunny Jain, leading their ensembles in performances of original music, much of it comprised of new works. The BJU's fourth annual compilation CD is also available now as a digital download only at http://brooklynjazz.bandcamp.com
A New Residency From the BJU & Connection Works: Starting on the first Thursday after the Festival, March 11, the BJU, in collaboration with Connection Works (connectionworks.org), will be curating a residency at Korzo, a new spot for jazz and improvised music in Brooklyn (667 5th Avenue, eurotrip.brooklyn.com). In the interest of developing and presenting original works and new ensembles, every BJU & Connection Works member will curate the Thursday night shows for a month at a time. Sets at 9:30 and 11 PM every Thursday.
Since the Spring of 2008 BJURecords has been actively expanding its catalog with recordings from a diverse group of Brooklyn-based artists who, in their own brilliantly unique way, are defining the Brooklyn/NYC jazz scene. The full catalog, and additional information is available at BJURecords.com. Releases in 2010 will include new recordings from trombonist Mike Fahie (feat. Bill McHenry, Ben Monder, Ben Street, Billy Hart), trumpeter David Smith, drummers Sunny Jain and Owen Howard, and bassist Alexis Cuadrado.
