“Jazz 101” is a tight playlist designed to give listeners a fun and educational introduction to jazz. It’s heavy on classic tracks by jazz greats like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis, and also includes music by modern masters like Roy Hargrove, John Scofield and The Bad Plus, to give listeners a broad view of jazz history.
The “Top 50 Jazz Albums of All Time” channel takes a different approach, playing [mostly] every track from 50 albums that AccuJazz program director Lucas Gillan deemed worthy of the utmost distinction. Gaining some insight and direction from other critics’ lists, including the Penguin Guide’s core collection and the website Jazz100, Gillan also injected some of his own opinion and came up with a list that includes everything from trad jazz to avant-garde, straight-ahead to fusion, and solo piano to big band. The perennial “best album” pick, Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, is included, along with similarly lauded works like John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme and Sonny Rollins’ Saxophone Colossus. Some albums might come as a surprise to certain listeners, however: Peter Brötzmann’s sonic assault Machine Gun is included, along with modern albums by Brad Mehldau and Bill Frisell.
