The Tanglewood Jazz Festival, produced by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and held every Labor Day weekend, has been selected as a participant in NEA Jazz Masters Live, a National Endowment for the Arts program of performances and residencies featuring NEA Jazz Masters, cooperatively managed by Arts Midwest. This is the first grant the festival has received from the program.
NEA Jazz Masters who will be featured in the 2011 Tanglewood Jazz Festival lineup are drummer Jimmy Cobb and composer/conductor Gunther Schuller. Mr. Cobb will be featured on Sunday, September 4, with his Coast to Coast Septet who will perform a retrospective of his work through the decades with legendary musicians Miles Davis, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan and Wes Montgomery as well as his more recent work as a band leader and soloist with Cobb's Mob. The Coast to Coast Septet will be joined by vocalist, Mary Stallings. Mr Cobb will also present a master class for young drummers in collaboration with the Berkshires Jazz festival, which works extensively with young jazz musicians in the Berkshires area schools.
Gunther Schuller will appear as a special guest conductor with the Mingus Orchestra on Sunday September 4, and will feature four pieces from Charles Mingus' body of work that he arranged for the ensemble including Taurus in the Arena of Life," Half Mast Inhibition," Noon Night," and Chill of Death," (a world premiere Schuller arrangement).
Both NEA Jazz Masters will participate in an in-depth interview providing festival goers as well as online viewers the opportunity to hear them discuss their careers and musical philosophies. Additionally, there will be a screening of the live performanceconducted by Gunther Schuller at Lincoln Center in 1989 of Charles Mingus' Epitaph," a two and one-half hour score that was never presented in full during Mingus' life-time.
