Jazzkaar, Tallinn, Spring!

Festival Jazzkaar invites you to celebrate jazz, spring and the city of Tallinn during the last week of April 20th to 29th of April, 2012. The festival runs over a period of 9 days including two weekends, which makes up two opportunities for a perfect spring city break! More often than ever Tallinn is being pointed out for its excellent tourist facilities and a welcoming atmosphere. Being the biggest jazz festival of the Baltics with its 15,000 visitors Jazzkaar now offers travel packages to our foreign visitors.

This year's lineup presents great artists Jan Garbarek, Lizz Wright, The Brand New Heavies, Christian McBride Trio, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Das Kapital, Jo Stance and many others. The festival also includes a number of workshops and urban activities.

Having served the year 2011 as the European Capital of Culture, among other things Tallinn and Jazzkaar has inherited something that we call the Urban Project. It brings jazz music closer to the audience— to the streets, parks, town squares, trams, working spaces and city's ports. Last years have witnessed many astonished faces over musicians playing jazz with power drills and burning instruments and all this will be continued throughout the festival's 2012 edition.

The first weekend from 20th to 22nd of April is all about spring in the city and emerging jazz. Festival opens on Friday with a surprise act. Saturday will see a day-time children's concert and a festival in a festival—we're hosting 12 Points Plus—a snapshot of preeminent new jazz in Europe right now. Sunday concludes the first weekend with a pleasant open-air day concerts all over the hippest district in Tallinn—namely Kalamaja.

The second weekend from 27th to 29th will see renowned jazz artists, festival headliners. This time the top trio consists of Jan Garbarek (Norway), Lizz Wright (USA) and The Brand New Heavies (UK)!

The main architect of the Northern jazz sound and one of the great men of global jazz music, the Norwegian Jan Garbarek is a sax legend already on his lifetime. His saxophone is recognizable from thousands, there is something very special in his interpretations and soundscapes that are impossible to replicate. No wonder he is one of the most loved musicians of all times at Jazzkaar Festival and this time around he has a new program and line-up to present. Trilok Gurtu with his versatile drum arsenal, Indian rhythms and world music patterns adds a unique color to the band's sound.

Lizz Wright's warm, velvety voice and great force of inspiration has brought her success on many different stages all over the world. The 32-year-old singer belongs surely to the elite of the jazz vocalists. She has released four successful records under the Verve label. Last year she toured Europe's greatest festivals together with Jazzkaar's favorites Angelique Kidjo and Dianne Reeves. Lizz Wright performs in Estonia for the first time.

The legendary acid jazz group from London The Brand New Heavies has gotten known all over the world in their over quarter of a century lasting existence. As a founder of this style they have crossed jazz, funk and hip-hop in a unique way. The group's records have been sold more than three million copies—super songs like “Never Stop," “Dream on Dreamer" and “You Are The Universe" are just a short beginning in the long list of hits.

Festival gold sponsor is Elion and main sponsors are Eesti Päevaleht and ERGO. Equally important is the support from Tallinn City, the Ministry of Culture, Estonian Cultural Endowment, My City Hotel, foreign institutions and local partners.

Tallinn International Festival Jazzkaar will bring in the spring once again with its 23rd edition. Join us in celebrating jazz, spring and Tallinn from April 20th to 29th 2012! The program and well-valued travel packages are available at our website.
