The convergence of cabaret presentations and jazz is becoming more evident and popular at Jazz festivals.

Joe Flynn packed “Jazz” audiences to his presentation of comedy patter and topical songs at the recent Gold Coast Jazz Festival and the Newcastle Jazz Festival. George Washingmachine performs at most local Jazz festivals and sets up comedy patter in between playing a few tunes on his fiddle. James Morrison presents a bag of tricks with his presentations. In addition to his brilliant musicianship he plays his trumpet upside down, plays two notes at a time on his trombone or plays piano on the reverse side etc. Janet Seidel has recently published in the Manly Daily that she is considering her future work as a cabaret styled artist in preference to “Jazz” concerts and limiting her band to the minimum of solos.

There is another Sydney band that is becoming very popular because they perform cabaret style shows at “Jazz” venues. This band is running around Sydney and Internationally and they seem to get invited to a host of Jazz festivals and major music festivals, they are usually programmed as a low key band with no build up at all. Once they do their show, it is nearly impossible for a “jazz” act to follow them, they have to follow a scorching rendition of Czardas, Flight of the Bumblebee or a Django/ Grapelli version of Undecided, a few French and Spanish tunes sung in glorious harmony all along with a fare of stunning American show tunes?.
