Sat Aug 27 STRING AND BOW FESTIVAL: TANYA KALMANOVITCH DUO AND QUARTET (Mat Maneri, Tanya Kalmanivitch, viola & violin; Joe Fiedler/Tanya Kalmanovitch; Joe Fiedler, trombone; Tanya Kalmanovitch, viola & violin; Chris Lightcap, bass; Owen Howard, drums) Two shows one cover:

9:00P Tanya Kalmanovitch & Mat Maneri

10:30P Joe Fieldler/Tanya Kalmanovitch Quartet

Violinists Mat Maneri and Tanya Kalmanovitch have more in common than their uncommon instrument: they share a probing and elastic brand of free improvisation that prizes rigorous motivic and rhythmic exploration as much as emotional expressivity. A rare opportunity to hear these two outstanding exponents of the contemporary viola in an intimate duo setting.

Joe Fiedler/Tanya Kalmanovitch Quartet

Uniquely virtuosic and versatile, trombonist Joe Fiedler has played with a veritable who’s who of New York’s jazz, avant-garde and Latin music scenes. Tonight he joins violist/violinist Tanya Kalmanovitch in the debut of their innovative new quartet. Free improvisation, propulsive swing and extended composition cast an avant-garde spin on Latin music.

Tanya Kalmanovitch - bio

Since moving to New York in late 2004, Tanya Kalmanovitch is fast making a name for herself in the city’s jazz and improvised music scenes. She was named among All About Jazz New York’s “Best New Talents” of 2004, and has appeared as a leader and co-leader of several new projects in the first months of 2005. Among these are the collaborative string trio Major Over Minor with violinist Rob Thomas and bassist Lindsey Horner, and a collaborative duo with pianist Myra Melford.

A formidable classical performer, Kalmanovitch graduated from the Juilliard School and performed with the Turtle Island String Quartet before embarking on ethnomusicological research that would eventually take her to South India, where she lived for a year investigating the connections between jazz and Karnatic music. During this time, Kalmanovitch also released two albums as leader of her quartet Hut Five (with Rick Peckham, Ronan Guilfoyle and Owen Howard), 2002's Hut Five and 2004’s Out where the trains don’t run. A new recording with Myra Melford will be released in 2006.

”Don’t let Canadian viola player Tanya Kalmanovitch’s Juilliard pedigree fool you into thinking she can’t cut it in a heated improv setting. For proof, check out the two excellent CDs she made with her quartet, Hut Five—both the crafty, tuneful self-titled debut and the freewheeling, spontaneous follow-up, Out Where the Trains Don’t Run.” Time Out New York (Critic’s Pick)

“...viola/violinist Tanya Kalmanovitch only recently made the move to New York and is already creating quite a splash. Nominated as one of AAJ-NY's “Best New Talents" of 2004, expect to hear her name and music more as time goes by" Laurence Donohue-Green, All About Jazz New York

“This is an exceptional and welcome venture that brings together free-jazz improvisation, contemporary music and rock, creating one of the more engaging recordings heard in some time ... Listen to Rara Avis, a stunning tone poem, and her poetic sorties on the seven vignettes that are the core of this session and you will hear a musician who is alive with creativity and ideas." Irwin Block, Review of “Hut Five," Montreal Gazette

“Kalmanovitch is an exceptional musician. In soloing she thinks compositionally, with an expressive contrast between the astringent chromaticism of her lines and compositions and her warmly malleable tone." Ray Comiskey, The Irish Times

Joe Fiedler - bio

Since moving to New York in 1993, trombonist Joe Fiedler has performed in a wide array of musical settings within both the Jazz and Latin music scenes. He has performed or recorded with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Lee Konitz, Kenny Wheeler, Cecil Taylor, Anthony Braxton, The Mingus Big Band, The Maria Schneider Orchestra, and Myra Melford. Currently, he is a member of Andrew Hill’s Sextet+11, Fast and Bulbous: The Captain Beefheart Project, saxophonist Chris Jonas' The Sun Spits Cherries, and Ed Ware's Tree. He has appeared on more than 50 recordings, including his 1999 debut as a leader, “110 Bridge St.” (CIMP) and the upcoming release “Joe Fiedler Plays the Music of Albert Mangelsdorff” (Clean Feed).

As a member of New York's Latin music scene, Fiedler was a founding member of the highly acclaimed Latin Jazz group Timbalaye, led by percussionist Ralph Irizarry. He has performed with such greats as Tito Puente, Hilton Ruiz, Dave Valentin, The Chico O'Farrill Orchestra, Nestor Torres and Papo Lucca. Fiedler has also been a featured soloist with a “Who’s Who” of singers, including “The Queen of Salsa”, Celia Cruz, vocal legends Cheo Feliciano, Lalo Rodriguez, and Andy Montanez, former Fania All-Stars, Ismael Miranda and Pete El Conde Rodriguez, and current superstars, La India, Domingo Quinones, and Tito Nieves. He is currently playing with pianist Larry Harlow and the Latin Legends, drummer Bobby Sanabria's Grammy-nominated Latin Big Band, violin virtuoso Alfredo De La Fe, and the exciting Latin fusion group Viento de Agua.

“Fiedler's among the most impressive trombonists to emerge in the past couple of decades. He's got a complete set of tools: excellent chops and range, a big warm tone, and mastery of extended techniques." Harvey Pekar, Signal to Noise Magazine

“Joe Fiedler is a completely new name on the trombone, so it is an unmitigated pleasure to hear his swaggering trombone participating in the outstanding collaborative trio on 110 Bridge St ... this is a strong debut: Very listenable and original, it marks the entry of a new trombone sound (and a powerful saxophone voice) on the scene." Steven A Loewy, Cadence Magazine

“Fiedler’s grasp of the pantonal capabilities of his instrument is intoxicating in its freshness ... there's just too much creativity to digest in a single setting. Get this disc and rest assured that even after an initial listen there will be many future repasts to feast your ears on." Derek Taylor, All About Jazz

Mat Maneri - bio

Mat Maneri, born 1969 in Brooklyn, studied with Juilliard Quartet co-founder Robert Koff, and began playing with his father at the age of 14. Mat is largely responsible for the fact that Joe Maneri’s work finally found a hearing, but he is more than his father's most eloquent disciple. Pianist Matthew Shipp has called Mat “one of the five greatest improvisers on the planet” and recognition that the younger Maneri is a figure of central importance in the music is growing. The long list of musicians with whom he has worked includes Cecil Taylor, Joe McPhee, Borah Bergman, William Parker, Joe Morris, Tim Berne, Craig Taborn, Ray Anderson, T.K. Ramakrishnan and many others. Mat Maneri has recorded widely, and led a number of groups, often with drummer Randy Peterson and, latterly, trumpeter Dave Ballou and vibraphonist Matt Moran. His discography includes over 70 recordings as a leader and side musician, including the solo album “Trinity" (ECM). 8:30PM www.tanyakalmanovitch.com
