Following on last season's sold-out tribute to Herbie Hancock, the Grammy Award—winning bassist Christian McBride returns to Stanford at the helm of his acclaimed acoustic ensemble, Inside Straight, for a performance presented by Stanford Lively Arts on Saturday, November 13 at 8:00 p.m. in Dinkelspiel Auditorium.

In this evening, McBride will be joined by some of the most in-demand players on the scene today: saxophonist Jaleel Shaw, vibraphonist Warren Wolf, Jr. (featured on the group's 2009 debut disc, Kind of Brown), pianist Christian Sands, and drummer Ulysses Owens. Of the group's 2007 performance debut The New York Times wrote, “When the bassist Christian McBride feels good about a groove, he savors it, exults in it." The concert is a continuation of Lively Arts' collaboration with Stanford Jazz Workshop and the National Jazz Museum of Harlem, of which McBride is a co-director, and will be preceded by three free ancillary events.

On Thursday, November 11, Jazz Museum co-director Loren Schoenberg will return to campus to lead a jazz discussion with trumpeter Jack Walrath (a notable alumnus of Charles Mingus' famed ensembles of the 1970s) at the Cantor Arts Center from 12-1:30 p.m. The afternoon of his November 13 performance, from 4:30-6:00 p.m. at Dinkelspiel Auditorium, McBride will lead a free master class for student ensembles selected by Stanford Jazz Workshop director Jim Nadel. Also that day, Lively Arts and Aurora Forum Director Mark Gonnerman will launch a season-long Jazz Book Club for Lively Arts patrons and the campus community. For this meeting, on November 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Stanford Coffee House (CoHo), the group will discuss Charles Mingus's autobiography, Beneath the Underdog.

The concert is generously supported by Abe and Marian Sofaer and The Koret Foundation, KCSM Jazz 91, and The Stanford Terrace Inn. Funded by the Koret Foundation, The Koret Jazz Project is a multi-year initiative to support, expand, and celebrate the role of jazz in the artistic and education programming of Stanford Lively Arts.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born in Philadelphia in 1972, Christian McBride is widely considered to be one of the finest bassists of his generation. McBride has performed and recorded with jazz legends and ensembles including Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Diana Krall, Roy Haynes, Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, and Ray Brown's “Superbass" with John Clayton, as well as with hip-hop, pop, soul, and classical musicians such as Kathleen Battle. Since 2000, McBride has fronted his own acoustic and electric jazz and funk ensembles. In 2006, McBride was named to the position of “Creative Chair for Jazz" with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, taking over from Dianne Reeves. He was in turn succeeded by Herbie Hancock last year.
