Some of you may have seen the 2003 comedy film, Calendar Girls, based on the true story of a group of middle-aged British women who produced a nude calendar to raise money for leukemia research. I thought it would be a fantastic idea to create a calendar of semi-clad jazz musicians – we think it might be a first in jazz. So we convinced 13 of our finest Bay Area musicians to pose for each month of 2013. (Saxophonist Madaline Duran and husband, guitarist Eddie Duran, appear as a duo on one of the months.) They bravely stripped down to basics and were photographed wearing little more than big smiles, behind musical instruments and related gear placed strategically to create a modest effect. Like the civic club ladies of Yorkshire, who hid some of their assets behind sunflowers and garden trellises, our fearless musicians have done it for a good cause.

This Saturday evening (December 1st), you will have a chance to view and purchase these calendars at the Jazzalicious Calendar Concert celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Sonoma Valley Jazz Society at the Vintage House, 2264 First Street East in downtown Sonoma. Doors will open at 6:30 PM, with a no host wine and beer bar, plus light appetizers. Show starts around 7:30 PM. Admission is $25. You can reserve tickets by calling 707-373-0700 or by using Pay Pal.

Jazz deejay, Dick Conte, talked up the event this past Saturday on KCSM-FM after he played - appropriately enough - Cheesecake, by Dexter Gordon, from the current Larry Vuckovich CD, Somethin’ Special. Also this Saturday on Westcoast Live Mike Greensill will be giving away some calendars! So you can see everyone is getting excited about this event and the calendar. What will the musicians wear that night? You’ll have to attend the show to find out.
