This season of Smooth Jazz Summer Nights Concerts on the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing celebrates the nation’s best and brightest jazz performers. An evening summer breeze, a beautiful setting, the sounds of horns, smooth vocals, and heart pounding percussions will make these concerts a summertime must-do event. This season’s power-packed lineup will grace the stage on the Delaware River Waterfront every Friday night in August beginning at 7:30PM. The Friday night concert series is absolutely FREE and will be followed by landside fireworks every Friday night at 9:15PM.

Keyboardist Alex Bugnon opened the series on August 2. For the last two decades, he has been an energetic force on the contemporary jazz scene, producing over nine albums while building a huge fan base as a touring musician. On August 9, the versatile saxophonist Najee whose first two recordings went platinum, will take the stage. He is considered one of contemporary jazz’s true pioneers, inspiring the whole urban vibe that took over the instrumental world throughout the ’90s. Peter White, the headliner on August 16, has maintained a reputation as one of the most versatile and prolific acoustic guitarists on the contemporary jazz landscape. His sound combines elements of jazz, pop and classical guitar to create music that is singular and at the same time accessible to a broad audience. Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, playing on August 23, is an Edison Award winning trumpeter-composer-producer and bandleader who is among a handful of talented young jazz artists who are expanding their artistic vision beyond the strict confines of the genre’s tradition. The series will close on August 30 with headliner Jonathan Butler. As a young South African, Butler became the first black artist played on white South African radio stations. Since then, he has toured the world with such acclaimed artists as Kirk Whalum, Dave Koz, and Ruby Turner, earning Grammy nominations and rave reviews along the way.

Every Friday in August features a nationally-renowned jazz musician performing a FREE summer night concert on the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing. Either stay after the concert, or end your night at the waterfront to watch the river be illuminated by a landside fireworks show. Talent: August 2: Alex Bugnon; August 9: Najee; August 16: Peter White; August 23: Christian Scott; August 30: Jonathan Butler.
