Shunzo Ohno, tirelessly has been in the front lines with recovery efforts for the Kobe earthquake and Tohoku Tsunami disasters. Mr. Ohno has always been a champion of collaborative cultural projects. An example is his work with the Howard University Jazz Orchestra at the Kennedy Center, and writing music as well as performing on the documentary with the Childrens Rights Organization. He was invited by the jazz master Art Blakey in the 1970’s to play in New York and went on to work with the great American artists, Gil Evans, Herbie Hancock and many more. The American and Japanese cultures organically developed in his music. In the last 5 years, Mr. Ohno has dedicated his efforts to Recovery with Hope and Courage inspired by the people of Tohoku and Kobe with over 25 performances in Northern Japan and Kobe since 2011. The effects of such catastrophes are long lasting as generations are impacted. Meeting the local families and playing songs that inspire hope has been Mr. Ohno’s core resolution.

Through his own personal experiences with a car accident permanently damaging his teeth (a disaster for a trumpeter, and then later in his life facing aggressive 4th stage cancer to his throat) Shunzo has experienced the spirit of recovery.

Shunzo Ohno received the Grand Prize in the prestigious International Songwriting Competition: First time in the history of the competition a Jazz Artist won Grand Prize.

For the entire month of May and early June, he will tour Japan and return to New York for a June 17th performance at The Cutting Room. A documentary film will be the New York premier at this performance.
