The Art Space that ShapeShifts Music and Creativity


Brooklyn, NY: In today’s fast evolving music industry it’s not just the musicians and the marketplace that need to be flexible and adaptable; music venues also need to accommodate every conceivable audio-visual need. Thus ShapeShifter Lab, Brooklyn’s newest and most exciting live music venue, is set to take all aspects of live and recorded performance interactivity to a new level. With in-house state-of-the-art technology combined with a flexible 3,600 square foot performance space, suitable for virtually any high-end (or intimate) live show, ShapeShifter Lab is blurring the boundaries between studio, stage and audience to offer a truly unique performance environment.

World-renowned bass guitarist Matthew Garrison, son of Jimmy Garrison (bassist for John Coltrane), is the venue’s artistic director and co-owner alongside business partner Fortuna Sung. Together they have created a much-needed space to host the world’s most innovative artists who wish to present their work at the highest level. What makes ShapeShifter Lab so versatile is that it is completely adaptable to any artistic need with multi-track recording, high-definition video capture, programmable lighting displays and live surround sound mixing all possible; through the venue’s 8,000 Watt sound system that can be configured pretty much anywhere within the venue. The space is also available as recording studio, rehearsal room and private showcase space as well as providing a highly conducive setting for music workshops and master classes. The walls also double nicely as an exhibition space for visual artists.

Matthew has also been busy recording a new project of his at ShapeShifter Lab, to be released online as an interactive website in June 2012, and has successfully video and audio captured performances by Meshell Ndegeocello, Arto Tuncboyaciyan, Gene Lake, Terri Lyne Carrington, David Binney, Adam Rogers, Mark Guiliana, Jojo Mayer, Marko Djordjevic, Hadrien Feraud, Tobias Ralph. Many more incredible artists are scheduled to come participate on this ground breaking project throughout May 2012.

The venue has already hosted outstanding live shows and workshops from the likes of rising stars Snarky Puppy, bass prodigy Hadrien Feraud, drummer Louis Cato, Human Element which featured Scott Kinsey, Arto Tunboyaciyan, Gene Lake and Matthew Garrison, drum phenomenon Mark Guiliana’s band Manolam featuring Stu Brooks and David Holmes (Dub Trio), pure guitar genius by Ben Monder, the amazing Matt and Akiko Pavolka projects, a blazing set from David Torn and his new trio with Tim Berne and drummer Ches Smith, plus a performance from Felix Pastorius, son of the late great bass legend Jaco Pastorius. ShapeShifter Lab’s wide ranging program throughout May includes concerts from drummer Ziv Ravitz, an exciting trio featuring guitarist Nels Cline, saxophonist Tim Berne and drum legend Jim Black, plus shows from renowned pianist Kenny Werner and keyboardist Jason Lindner of Now Vs. Now fame.

Things really take off in June with a stellar trio featuring Matthew Garrison alongside acclaimed saxophonist Ravi Coltrane (son of John) and legendary jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette, who make their live performance debut at the venue. Also appearing throughout June are vocalists Sera Serpa, saxophonist Oliver Lake, Screaming Headless Torsos guitar man David Fiuczynski, rising star saxophonist Noah Preminger, bass virtuosos Tony Grey and Mike Pope, superb French pianist Jean-Michel Pilc and a new trio featuring Brad Mehldau’s wonderful rhythm section of bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard, alongside George Garzone. Celebrated soprano saxophonist Bob Belden (best known for his outstanding reworkings of Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew.)

ShapeShifter Lab effortlessly combines all aspects of live music performance in a contemporary space that’s designed to bring both making and listening to music to a whole new level. Whatever shape it’s shifting into.
