First-ever CEO will work in partnership with the organization’s Founder and Executive Artistic Director Randall Kline

San Francisco, CA — SFJAZZ, the leading nonprofit jazz organization on the West Coast, announced today that Donald Derheim will assume the position of Chief Executive Officer beginning January 2, 2014. Mr. Derheim joins SFJAZZ as it enters its next phase of growth and celebrates the milestone first anniversary of its new home, the critically acclaimed SFJAZZ Center. An accomplished media executive, Mr. Derheim served for more than two decades at public television and radio broadcaster KQED Inc. in San Francisco. In 2010, he was appointed Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President, where he was responsible for the strategic and operational oversight of one of the most popular public and financially successful media companies in the country.

Mr. Derheim will work closely with SFJAZZ Founder and Executive Artistic Director Randall Kline to fulfill the SFJAZZ mission. As part of his CEO responsibilities, he will oversee long- term planning and development for the organization to further engage its members and audiences and will focus on the success and financial performance of the newly built SFJAZZ Center. Mr. Derheim will play a critical role in the development and diversification of new and existing funding sources, including revenue streams based on new technologies.

“On behalf of the entire SFJAZZ Board of Trustees, I am pleased to welcome Don to our wonderful organization,” says Bannus Hudson, Chair. “After 30 years of enormous growth and artistic success fueled by the genius of Randall Kline, SFJAZZ finally has its own home that has been universally praised by musicians, patrons, and the media. We are embarking on an exciting new phase of SFJAZZ and the creation of a new CEO position, to work with Randall to achieve all of the organization’s potential, is an important next step. Don is the perfect person to fill this challenging role, and I couldn’t be more appreciative that he is joining our organization.”

“I’m delighted that SFJAZZ has found someone of Don’s enormous breadth of skills and experience,” said Randall Kline, SFJAZZ Founder and Executive Artistic Director. “His combination of expertise in corporate and community partnerships, marketing, fundraising, and operations along with his proven track record of spearheading innovative content deals and generating new sources of revenue is exactly what is needed to ensure that SFJAZZ will continue to grow and prosper in our new home. I look forward to working with him for many years to come."

“I am thrilled to have been selected by the Board of Trustees to work with Randall Kline to lead such a prestigious and culturally relevant arts organization into the future,” Mr. Derheim said. “While the business of music may be continually disrupted by technology and the new rules of commerce, SFJAZZ is well suited to play an important role in performance, education, and distribution of jazz well into the future. There are many challenges today for nonprofit arts organizations but I am confident we have the right place and the right team to serve a new generation of the jazz community.”
