For jazz fans in the Philadelphia region, the following event may be of significant interest. On November 15, 2008, from 3pm to 8pm, the Philadelphia Clef Club at Broad and Fitzwater Streets will offer Jazz Up, Down, and Around: Taking Jazz in All Directions, a feast of musical performances, a talk by WRTI radio host Bob Perkins with discussion, and a showing of his recent documentary about Charlie Parker's Philadelphia roots. It is not well known, but “Bird” came through Philadelphia often, looking for musical ideas, and jamming with the local musicians. He also performed in his early days with Dizzy Gillespie in a memorable concert at the Academy of Music. It so happened that two young musicians named John Coltrane and Benny Golson were in the audience and forever changed by the experience.
Musical performances will be provided by the Sherry Butler Quartet, the Elliot Levin Ensemble, the Philadelphia Clef Club Youth Band, and Warren Oree and the Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble.
The Clef Club has a delightful state of the art auditorium. Food and drink will be available for purchase.
Admission is FREE. For further information, call 215-557-7277 or visit our website.
