Tony Williams virtually personifies the words “Philadelphia Jazz.” He’s been playing, and swinging—in a timeless, swing-to-bop style that defies categorization—since childhood, and in an astounding career that’s spanned almost six decades, he’s worked with giants like Wild Bill Davis, Lionel Hampton, Nat Adderley, Jimmy McGriff, Trudy Pitts and dozens of others.

As an educator, the jazz courses he offered in the Philadelphia public school system were ground-breakers, and many of his students have become jazz stars in their own right.

And the Tony Williams Scholarship Jazz Festival, starring the areas’ finest improvising talents, just celebrated its 23rd year as one of Philadelphia’s most outstanding, annual jazz events.
