A mainstay of the “downtown" creative music scene in the '80s and early '90s, Samm Bennett will return from Japan to perform at Location One for his first New York City appearance in 7 years! Bennett is a drummer, a percussionist and a creator of electronic music. He will perform a few of his trademark solo pieces followed by an evening of trios with guitarist Marc Ribot and Ned Rothenberg on saxophone and clarinets.

During Bennett's New York years he led his own group, Chunk, and played a central role in the cooperative groups, Bosho (with Kumiko Kimoto, Yuval Gabay and Hanh Rowe), Semantics (with Elliott Sharp and Ned Rothenberg) and Third Person (with the late Tom Cora on cello and an ever-evolving cast of third persons). He also contributed to various projects of John Zorn, Shelley Hirsch, George Cartwright, Christian Marclay and many others. Both his solo work and his group compositions are characterized by intricate, multi-directional rhythms and rich, varied sonic textures.

In 1996 Bennett relocated to Tokyo, where his primary ongoing project is Skist, a duo with singer and electronic sound creator Haruna Ito. Skist tracks have appeared on compilations from labels such as Mille Plateaux, FatCat and Luaka Bop; their first full length CD ELLIPSIS was released in Japan in September 2002 on their own POLARITY label. In addition Bennett has performed and recorded in Asia with many artists, including: Otomo Yoshihide, shamisen virtuoso Tanaka Yumiko, Okinawan singer/sanshin player Daiku Tetsuhiro, Kazutoki Umezu and Korean hojok master and shaman Kim Suk Chul. Along with Ned Rothenberg and guitarist Kazuhisa Uchihashi, Bennett is a member of the newly-formed trio, R.U.B., whose first release Are You Be is just out on Animul Records.

Marc Ribot's latest release on Atlantic is a solo recording entitled Saints. He leads the CUBANOS POSTIZOS and has played live and on recordings with a who's-who of musicians: John Zorn, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits and Medeski, Martin and Wood, to name but a few.

Ned Rothenberg has performed internationally in solo and group contexts for 25 years. He has lead the ensembles Double Band, Power Lines and SYNC (with Jerome Harris, guitars and Samir Chaterjee, tabla) and has worked on other projects with Paul Dresher, Yuji Takahashi, Sainkho Namchylak, Elliott Sharp, John Zorn, Katsuya Yokoyama, and Evan Parker. His latest solo recording is a double-CD, Interval on Animul Records.
