Tuesday, November 28, 4:00 - 6:00 PM Jazz guitarist and composer Ron Affif will lead a jazz seminar as part of Long Island University's Jazz Clinic Series. The series features musicians and music professionals with extraordinary links to jazz history in addition to being outstanding in their own right.
The clinics are free and open to the general public. They take place on various Tuesdays, from 4:00 - 6:00 PM, in room H-106 of the Humanities Building on Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus. The campus is located at the corner of Flatbush Avenue Extension and Dekalb Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn. It is accessible to all major bus and subway routes and Long Island Railroad. Ron Affif was born in Pittsburgh, December 1964, and studied with Jerry Conderata and Joe Negri before heading to the West Coast in 1983 to study under the learned tutelage of maternal uncle and bebop great Ron Anthony. While in L.A. he was fortunate to take a few lessons from the legendary Joe Pass, before moving to New York in late 1989, where he still lives and works. In the late 90's, he cut five or six albums under the Fantasy label (the best of which is “52nd Street"), and can be caught every Monday at the Zinc Bar, downtown on Houston Street. Drummer Jeff “Tain" Watts, bassist Essiet Essiet, and fellow Pittsburgher and brilliant piano man Dave Budway make this gig on most weeks, and an exciting array of famous artists show up and sit-in on any given week-- George Benson and Natalie Cole to name only two. Ron's style is reminiscent of Wes Montgomery and Benson himself, but George hears a unique style in Ron's playing and includes him amongst his “favorite type of guitar player ... one that plays with fire."
