Rich Mix breaks boundaries this season with a jazz programme that combines music with film, history, literature and politics.
The programme begins with the explosive Let Freedom Ring! from Mercury/MOBO award winning saxophonist Denys Baptiste. The show features a world class line-up of jazz musicians; brand new visuals from VJ collective Yeast that reflect upon struggle for freedom, equality and justice by oppressed peoples throughout the international community; and extracts from the epic poem Mental Fight by Ben Okri.
Throughout the season we showcase contemporary artists (In the Mix with Soweto Kinch, Kairos 4tet, Darren Vidal Montgomery Taylor, Brassroots), alongside a series of films that document the musical history that has influenced them in Jazz on the Screen.

Denys Baptiste - LET FREEDOM RING!

Stirring contemporary jazz, mixed with gospel, blues and Afro-Cuban music, from Mercury/MOBO award winning saxophonist Denys Baptiste. The show is inspired by the spirit and rhythms of Dr Martin Luther King's momentous I Have A Dream which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2010, and features an explosive 11-piece international line-up including Abram Wilson, Andrew McCormack and Gary Crosby.
Jazz has always been closely connected with the struggle for freedom and justice. The suite's four parts - I Have A Dream, With This Faith, Let Freedom Ring!, and Free At Last - pay tribute to those who have fought to overcome oppression whilst expressing ideals which are as relevant today as they were 40, or even 200 years ago. Collaborating with Booker Prize winning author Ben Okri, Baptiste has synchronised extracts of Okri's epic poem Mental Fight into this exhilarating mix of contemporary jazz, gospel, blues, and Afro-Cuban music.
VJs from the acclaimed film-makers, Yeast join the band to present a creative live mix of footage of the musicians' performance on stage, the text of Ben Okri's poem, and powerful images of the struggle for freedom, equality and justice by oppressed peoples throughout the international community. An incredibly moving experience, the music and visuals act as powerful reminders of why the quest for freedom and civil rights must continue.

Thelonious Monk grew up to become one of the most innovative jazz pianists of all time. He ushered in the bebop era of the 1940s and influenced such contemporary greats as Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Produced by Clint Eastwood, the film features live performances by Monk and his band from their European concerts in 1967-1968 and interviews with friends and family who shed light on this jazz genius.

In 1958, a 28 year old Bert Stern had built for himself a reputation as one of the world's leading fashion and advertising photographers. Although he had ambitions to turn his talent to film, the opportunity did not present itself until the founder of the Newport Jazz Festival invited him to “take some pictures". That request would evolve into a full-fledged motion picture presenting some of the most remarkable scenes of live jazz ever brought to the screen. Performers include Louis Armstrong, Gerry Mulligan, Mahalia Jackson, Thelonius Monk, Chuck Berry and Chico Hamilton.

Tongue Fu is London's liveliest poetry event where the UK's sharpest wordsmiths flex their lyrical ninja skills to a masterful genre hopping house band. Intimate, profound and often hilarious, Tongue Fu is hosted by Chris Redmond (Ventriloquist), featuring Shane Solanki (Last Mango in Paris) and a host of spoken word stars. All with the improvised soundtrack of broken jazz from the Tongue Fu Band, (Nostalgia 77, UNKLE, Graham Coxon, Gwyneth Herbert).

Brassroots join us every first Wednesday of the month with the sole aim of blowing your mind, ears and eyes open to the way instruments can be used to their full potential. Led by American trombonist Jerome Harper, Brassroots is a 9-piece powerhouse group of horn/drum smiths packed with boundless energy and a musical concept that catapults the brass band genre into another dimension. Special guests will be handpicked each month to join the jamboree, and Rich Mix will be opening up the stage for one new jazz act to get involved each month too.
