Raising Rhythm is an NGO started by Hugh Samson, his students and colleagues at Toronto’s Humber College, Brian Chengala Shakarongo—a musician/teacher in Zambia and Scotland resident and saxophonist Keni Chernoff. Shakarongo and Chernoff played in the notable African group, Musi-O-Tunya, in the 1970's and Shakarongo dedicates his talents and position in the Zambian community to create a better future for the county's children . The goal of Raising Rhythm is to build a physical institution in Zambia where essential life skills are taught through music.

Samson, Chernoff and Shakarongo have been working with post graduate Marketing students at Humber to found Raising Rhythm and their immediate goal is to raise funds to help build Shakarongo`s dream academy in Zambia. “Our dream is for the academy in Lusaka, to be the first of many academies, launched in poor countries around the world; each with the goal of teaching vital life skills to young people through the universal language of music.”

“On Tuesday, May 7th at 8:30 PM, Raising Rhythm will be hosting a night of world music at the REX Hotel at 194 Queen Street West in Toronto. You'll be entertained by a group of outstanding musicians from Humber College`s Jazz Program. These`kids`are good! Recently, many of them played with jazz legend Jack DeJohnette in an SRO performance at the Humber Lakeshore Campus auditorium. You`ll hear more about Raising Rhythm`s plans at The REX”.

Please email for your information/questions to: [email protected], the email address for Raising Rhythm. If you wish, you can make further donations or pledges to this cause.

According to the World Bank, Zambia ranks 154th amongst countries in terms of average annual per capita income at $1,620. These kids need our help. Raising Rhythm's official website can be viewed at our website.
