After 20 years, I finally decided to go ahead and release this exciting album on Bandcamp.
It demonstrates Steve Reid extraordinary ability to spontaneously orchestrate within a jazz quartet, his inventiveness and wide range of dynamics, whether in a modal tune, a free-jazz composition or a romantic jazz standard.
The bassist Chris Lachotta met Steve Reid in Munich in the spring of 2000, and he introduced Steve to Boris Netsvetaev and Lena Bloch, who had already been playing with Chris since 1999.
Steve met an accordion player whilst in New York City and she brought him to Munich. Chris had been playing with her there, and he was very glad to have such a great drummer suddenly arrive on the scene, so he immediately created this quartet.
Together they played some festivals and gigs before Chris decided to hire an engineer and produce this live recording. This was Steve’s first European CD, and whilst others followed this, at the time Steve didn’t know he would be staying in Europe for a while, under Chris’ wing.
