Canadian saxophonist Peter Van Huffel has been a New York resident since 2002, and has quickly established a reputation as one of the most exciting, unique, new voices on the New York improvised music scene. After two years of regular performances in NY and abroad, Peter's Quintet has developed a truly unique sound that is constantly exciting and unpredictable. Peter's group features some of New York's most brilliant emerging musicians who are truly masters at improvisational music. They mix interactive free improvisation with complex written material that can stretch into new territory at any given moment. Probably the most exciting thing about this band is that they always perform as an ensemble, never putting too much emphasis on the individual soloist as in many traditional ensembles, and never ceasing to interact as true improvisers should. The music is always intense and constantly builds in a truly unique and refreshing way. As described by Peter Hum of the Ottawa Citizen, “Peter's music has one foot in the modern jazz mainstream and the other in the avant-garde."

On Sunday, the Peter Van Huffel Quintet will be performing two sets of all original music at the 55 Bar starting at 9:30pm. Much of the music they will be performing will be featured on their new CD which will be available sometime in the New Year. They will also be performing a mixture of new compositions by Peter and some of the other band members. This is a show not to be missed!
