In the aftermath of the explosion of musical structures which took place in the 1960's, there were plenty of musical fragments lying around, just waiting to be put to use. New structures needed to be built - the old ones which were still intact could not accommodate everybody anymore. As it is said, one man's trash is another man's treasure, and for those of us who came upon this wreckage in the mid-1970's, we had found quite a bounty indeed - enough materials to last a lifetime. While the fragments could never be put back together the same way as before, we soon discovered that they could be put together in seemingly endless new ways. And though there were holes and spaces where the pieces didn't fit together neatly like they had before, this allowed light to shine in and illuminate the fragments. In addition, by adjusting the placement of the fragments, we found we could *reflect* light as well. So depending on the positioning of the fragments, we were able to receive and reflect light from Africa, from India, from Cuba, from Jamaica, even unknown and unnamed places. We kept on building these structures until it became a way of life, and we are still building them. I am grateful to the musicians who came before us who caused the explosion to take place, and grateful that some of the fragments landed in our vicinity. We use them with the highest respect and continue the lifelong process of building. It's like we have no choice...like it was written. ~ Peter Apfelbaum
