University of the Pacific, in partnership with American University’s Initiative for Russian Culture and the Open World Leadership Center, will host an evening that spotlights jazz diplomacy, especially the special cultural relationship that exists through jazz between Russia and the United States.
Five Pacific students, all University of the Pacific Brubeck Fellows who make up the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet, will join Open World alumni musicians to form the first–ever U.S.-Russia Rising Stars Jazz Band. The band will reprise works that the late Dave Brubeck performed at the 1988 Reagan-Gorbachev Summit during an Oct. 8 performance at the Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress.
“This is an amazing opportunity for our fellows, because this is the sort of jazz diplomacy Dave Brubeck believed in so much,” said Simon Rowe, Brubeck Institute executive director. “Playing with the Russian musicians will be something that they will never forget.”
The 2013-14 Brubeck Fellows include bassist Sarah Kuo of Los Angeles, the first-ever female Brubeck Fellow; drummer Jalon D’Mere Archie of Houston; trumpeter Max Boiko of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; guitarist Sean Britt of Hingham, Mass.; and vibraphonist Joel M. Ross of Chicago.
The evening, which represents the third annual event that the Initiative for Russian Culture has hosted at the Library of Congress, will also feature a discussion with Russian jazz great Igor Butman, saxophone virtuoso, bandleader, club owner and television host.

About American University’s Initiative for Russian Culture: American University’s Initiative for Russian Culture (AU IRC) promotes greater understanding of Russian culture's versatility and richness among all Consortium students in the Washington, DC area. It builds lasting connections between Russians and Americans by reaching out to their hearts and minds. The AU IRC offers screenings of classic Soviet and Russian films with discussions led by visiting experts. Academic conferences, art exhibits, musical performances, and other events are held at American University, the Embassy of the Russian Federation, the Library of Congress, and other locations around the Washington Metropolitan area. The AU IRC organizes an annual summer trip to Russia for ten consortium students, and has awarded a total of fourteen merit and need-based grants to date for study in Russia. Expanding these offerings, the AU IRC will award five new study abroad grants this academic year. Courses on Russian arts and culture at American University offer students new perspectives on Russia.
