About Oleg Kireyev
It's hard to somehow amaze a listener in contemporary music, even in such an open music as jazz. Nevertheless Russian saxophonist Oleg Kireyev succeeded here. Western press calls Oleg “revolutionary reedman from the Urals" and this is not by chance: he does not only introduce novelties into yet known styles and easily combine existing jazz standards with exotic folklore, or show irreproachable professionalism and improvisation technique; he enriches jazz with his personal, emotional and very sincere perception. Oleg started his musical career in Ufa, where he was born; he studied piano in musical school there; and his first enchantment with jazz dates back to this period. Further on Oleg tried to join piano department of local Arts College a year earlier, but his application was rejected. But there and then a professor of popular music department of this college came around and offered him to master saxophone.
The Jazz band “Orlan" founded by Oleg in 1985 became noticeable phenomenon of Russian jazz scene. Having been fascinated by Bashkir folklore he was the first in Russia who started to practice ethno-approach in jazz. In close relations with folk singers he mastered guttural singing technique, introduced such folk instruments as “kurai" (Bashkir wind instrument) and “kubyz" (Jew's-harp) into his band, went into folk music arrangements and adaptation. In 1989 record company “Melodia" issued “Bashkir legends" LP. “Orlan" had been touring actively all around the country and abroad. World music movement was spreading widely around the globe therefore “Orlan" was accepted with enthusiasm everywhere.
In the early nineties when his musicians were engaged for work abroad, Oleg Kireyev started his solo career. First he did - consciously went into mainstream. However he preferred being his own master and have first-hand relations with experts to studies in Gnesin musical college - especially considering that he was in the middle of his active concert period.
He spent three years in Poland, famous for its open boarders and high caliber jazz art. One could take part in international jazz festivals there, play at one stage with world jazz stars. During this period Oleg took part in “Jazz Jambore" festival in Warsaw, every night performed in jazz clubs together with Polish jazzmen, work as art-director of “Ogrudek" club in Krakow. He played alongside Miles Davis rhythm section - it was jam turned into real concert.
In 1994 Kireyev won the scholarship and went to the USA to study in famous jazz saxophonist Bud Shank school. He was invited there after Bud listened to Oleg's solo album “Romantic", released in 1994. In the school Kireyev was soloist of “All stars students" band, which consisted of the best students. Together with Bud Shank band Oleg played as a soloist with such musicians as Hal Gallagher (Phil Woods pianist), Stieve Ellington etc. He took part in several concerts and festivals in Washington. His solo works (alongside polish jazzmen) were highly estimated by public and critics.
In 1996 Oleg Kireyev quartet was invited to Montreux festival, where he got a diploma for “outstanding performance at 30th anniversary festival". In 1997 Kireyev went to England to Birmingham festival, takes part in London “Earling jazz festival". On completion of the festival he was offered a tour in England. Since those time Oleg is frequent guest in England, participant of regular festivals and concerts in the best jazz clubs of the country.
In 2000 Oleg issued CD with his pop-jazz program “Love Letters". Audience liked beautiful, emotional and romantic music so much that 70 000 copies of album were sold out very quickly.
However independent appreciation was even more eloquent: the biggest American jazz portal jazzreview.com gave five out of five marks to his disc “Song for Sonny". Compositions from this album can now be found in collections of different foreign labels parallel with Fausto Pappeti, Grover Washington and other respected performers tracks. Having addressed himself back again to ethnic jazz Kireyev created a project, which allows to absorb folklore from all over the world. We are talking about “Feng shui jazz theatre". Traditional swing, Bashkir guttural singing, Moldavian tunes, African rhythms and French poetry interlace in his “jazz theatre". It is sort of esplanade, open area, where every musician present in the hall can perform. And not necessarily a musician - artists make paintings, audience dance. Everybody gets involved into positive energy flux, coming down from the stage, deep themselves into meditation, experience influence of an old and ever meaning harmony doctrine. “Tea Art" (2003) and “Mandala" (2004) albums were issued as a result of Kireyevs experiments in the area of World music.
The name of Oleg Kireyev is well known abroad nowadays: he regularly performs at prestigious festivals and best club scenes in European countries, works together with famous musicians such as Jean Toisson, Courtney Pine, Dick Pierce, Denise Perrier, Ray Alexander, Scott Hamilton, Steve Ellington, Adam Nusbaum etc. Oleg's music is on the air at leading radio stations and TV channels in Russia, it was broadcasted on BBC (UK), Freedom (USA), Radio Saga (UK).
