With Strange Sweethearts in America Evening Features Acclaimed Singer-Songwriter Becca Stevens as a Special Guest

New York, New York -- The Irish Arts Center is proud to launch their new music series THIS IS IRISH MUSIC with the Celtic/Brazilian/Jazz fusion band Nos Novo, featuring Jo Lawry and James Shipp. THIS IS IRISH MUSIC: NOS NOVO'S STRANGE SWEETHEARTS IN AMERICA performs on Thursday, March 11 at 8 PM at the Irish Arts Center (553 West 51st Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues). Tickets are $15 and are available by calling SmartTix at 212-868-4444 or online at smarttix.com. For more information, visit irishartscenter.org.

Part of what makes jazz a truly American art form is its ability to absorb and celebrate the music of other cultures that wash up on its shores. Drawing from the repertoires of two of the most prominent Irish folk bands in history, The Chieftains and Planxty, Nos Novo brings the songs and sounds of Ireland mixed with Afro-Brazilian grooves, into the fold of New York's jazz and creative music scene.

Time Out New York calls Nos Novo a: “worldly mix of sea shanties, Celtic reels and airs, Brazilian soul and jazz spirit, played via a mix of strings and percussion instruments and the soaring voice of singer Jo Lawry. More amazing than the boldness of the mix is the seamlessness with which it all comes together on the band's lovely new debut album..."

Nos Novo features vibraphonist/percussionist James Shipp, the astounding singer Jo Lawry (fresh off her tour with Sting) on vocals, fiddle, and melodica, Gilad Hekselman on guitar, and Rogerio Boccato on drums and percussion. The evening features a special guest appearance by acclaimed singer-songwriter (and lead singer of Bjorkestra) Becca Stevens.

James Shipp's Nos Novo kicks off THIS IS IRISH MUSIC, a new music series at the Irish Arts Center that explores how contemporary artists are using traditional Celtic music in new and innovative ways.
