TRI-CENTRIC ORCHESTRA TO PREMIERE COMMISSIONS BY NICOLE MITCHELL, JASON KAO HWANG, AND KAMALA SANKARAM

8pm, April 21, 2013 at Roulette
509 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn NY

Brooklyn, NY - On April 21st at Roulette, the Tri-Centric Orchestra, the resident ensemble of Anthony Braxton’s Tri-Centric Foundation (TCF), will premiere three compositions for a 16- piece ensemble by composers Nicole Mitchell, Jason Kao Hwang, and Kamala Sankaram. The concert initiates TCF’s commissioning series, designed to offer the next generation of creative artists the opportunity to create ambitious new musical works, following Braxton’s tradition of innovative and uncompromising musical exploration.

Nicole Mitchell, a 2012 Doris Duke Artists Award recipient and renowned flautist, will present When Life’s Door Opens, using text from a long-form poem by the composer written for those at the crossroads of committing to the path of one's desire. The piece will feature vocalist/spoken word artists Damon Locks, Fay Victor, and the recorded vocals of world music star Kiran Ahluwalia. Mitchell's piece will be conducted by Taylor Ho Bynum.

Jason Kao Hwang, named Downbeat Magazine’s 2012 “Rising Star” violinist, will premiere Shifting Shorelines, With and Without, which engages primal forces at peace within dreams, but at war in the temporal world.

Vocalist and accordionist Kamala Sankaram, a recent American Theatre Wing grantee, will present Dark Flow, inspired by the cosmological mystery of the expanding universe. Immediately following the concert, TCF executive director Taylor Ho Bynum will moderate a post-performance talk with the three composer about their processes and inspirations.

Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for Roulette members/Tri-Centric monthly members (online only)/seniors/students, and can be purchased online at

The Tri-Centric Orchestra was founded by Anthony Braxton for the recording of the opera Trillium E in the spring of 2010. The project brought together an extraordinary community of creative artists: a family of artists over 60-musicians strong, equally comfortable improvising and interpreting the most rigorous notation, wholly committed to pursuing a new American music. The group has grown into a permanent and flexible entity, dedicated to performing the large ensemble works of Braxton and similarly forward-thinking composers, as well as developing the composers and conceptualists within its own ranks. This concert’s performers include Fay Victor (voice), Mike McGinnis, Matt Bauder, and Josh Sinton (reeds), Vincent Chancey, Joseph Daley, and Taylor Ho Bynum (brass), Amy Cimini, Marika Hughes and Ken Filiano (strings), and a rhythm section with Bryan Carrott, Amy Crawford, Rohin Khemani, and Tomas Fujiwara, in addition to the three featured composer/instrumentalists.
